No dog should ever experience sadness, let alone the trauma that a brave mama dog endured. When she needed human compassion most, she was abandoned on the roadside with her tiny newborn puppies. Heartbroken yet resolute, she wrapped her paws around them, wishing to shield them from harm. Although many people passed her by, she never lost hope, believing that a caring soul would come to save her and her family.
Saving Lives
In December 2024, while heading to Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA), board president Valerie Hicks noticed an unusual sight: an open crate on the roadside in Mississippi. Upon stopping, she discovered a distressed dog, later named Mama Evelyn, nestled with seven newborn puppies seeking warmth and love.
Hicks was heartbroken to realize that one of the puppies had not survived. Mama Evelyn’s sorrowful gaze revealed her helplessness, prompting Hicks to call her rescue partner, Christina, for assistance while comforting the mama dog.
The anxious mother began to relax as she sensed that help was finally at hand. Hicks reflected on the moment, saying, “Mom was very nervous, maybe the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen. But at the same time, she seemed very grateful,” as she recounted her experience to The Dodo.
Once Mama Evelyn and her puppies reached the shelter, the staff prepared a calm space for them to decompress.
