No dog deserves any sadness, let alone the trauma that a brave mama dog endured. When she needed compassion the most, she was abandoned on the roadside with her tiny newborn puppies. Heartbroken yet resolute, the mother dog gathered her courage to care for her babies, wrapping her paws around them to protect them from harm. Despite many passersby ignoring her plight, she clung to hope, believing a kind soul would save her and her little ones.
Saving Lives
In December 2024, Valerie Hicks was en route to Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA), where she is board president, when a peculiar sight caught her attention—an open crate with a furry figure lying inside. Upon stopping, she discovered the abandoned dog, later named Mama Evelyn. To her shock, she found seven newborn puppies snuggled close to their mother, seeking her warmth and love.
Heartbroken to find that one puppy didn’t survive, Hicks saw the helplessness in Mama Evelyn’s eyes. After reaching out to Christina, her rescue partner, Hicks comforted her, noting how anxious the mother dog appeared. “Mom was very nervous, maybe the saddest eyes I’ve ever seen. But at the same time, she seemed very grateful,” Hicks shared with The Dodo. Upon arriving at the shelter, Mama Evelyn and her puppies were given a quiet space to decompress and start anew.
Carefree Life In A Foster Home
Shortly after, a wonderful foster family opened their hearts and home to Mama Evelyn and her puppies, providing them with the love and care they needed. Mama Evelyn was a diligent mother, nursing her puppies and ensuring they were well taken care of. “This girl is one of the best moms ever. The puppies are robust and healthy, nursing almost constantly. When not nursing, they are in complete milk comas,” CARA shared on Facebook. Initially distrustful of humans due to her traumatic past, Mama Evelyn began to show her true sweet nature thanks to the nurturing environment of her foster home.
With each passing day, the puppies thrived, enjoying their time with their mother, who was gradually shedding her distrust of humans.
In February 2025, the furry family will transition to CARA’s foster-based rescue partner in Maine, where they’ll seek their forever homes. We hope that the wonderful Mama Evelyn and her adorable puppies find loving families who will cherish them and ensure they never face abandonment again.
