Woman Finds Lifeless Dog in Package and Rushes to Save Him

Date:

Many people express that the neglect of animals has reached alarming levels. This tragic tale resonates deeply with me and reinforces this view.

On a lovely sunny afternoon in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, a woman stepped out onto her porch, oblivious to the distressing sight awaiting her.

There, on her porch, was a cardboard box, evidently left by someone. Upon examining it closely, she was shocked to find a fluffy white dog inside.

The unfortunate pup was in a dire state—motionless and, to her horror, seemingly lifeless.

The Lifeless Dog In A Box

In a panic, she called her daughter, Janine Guido, the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue based in Pennsylvania.

“I received a call from my mom who usually only texts me, so I knew something was off. When I picked up, my suspicions were confirmed,” Janine recounted in a social media post.

Her mother was on the line, panicking and crying over a ‘lifeless’ dog that had been left in a box on her porch.

Without hesitation, Janine raced to her mother’s farm, but her mind was consumed with the troubling question of why anyone would abandon an already lifeless dog.

She quickly called her mom back, urging her to check if the dog was breathing…

“It turned out he wasn’t [deceased]; he was merely unconscious. I realized then it was a race against time,” Janine explained. “He felt like a lifeless doll. I scooped him up and dashed to the vet.”

The dog, a mix between breeds, was barely a year old—not yet mature.

He was gravely ill—severely underfed, matted, and covered in waste.

With cloudy pupils and seizures occurring on the way to the veterinarian, survival seemed like a long shot. Yet, miracles can indeed occur.

Beating The Odds

Once at the vet, Janine named the dog G.I. Joe, and he was given IV fluids and treated for his seizures.

His condition was dire, but within just a few days, he began to improve.

Before long, he was walking—albeit a bit unsteady—and eating all by himself.

All were astonished that this was the same dog found in such a critical state days earlier.

His health progressed rapidly, and upon his release from the clinic, G.I. Joe went directly to his foster home with Karen Spangler.

Karen is an incredible foster parent with experience caring for dogs with epilepsy, and she has two other dogs—one being blind like G.I. Joe.

“GI Joe (Joey) is doing great. Taking one step at a time. Working on potty training and he is doing great. Has started jumping up on occasion so we are working on that and “no”. He does appear to see some, probably shadows. He has a great smeller. He wags his tail often. For the condition he was in, he is doing awesome,” Speranza Animal Rescue shared an update from Karen on their Facebook page.

A Wonderful Foster Fail

Despite her initial reluctance to adopt another dog, G.I. Joe (whom she affectionately calls Joey) captivated Karen almost instantly.

“I was determined not to add another permanent dog to my family. I told several friends and family members that I would not end up as a foster failure,” Karen confessed to The Dodo.

This temporary arrangement quickly transitioned into a permanent home.

The stunning rescue pup formed such a strong bond with Karen, her grandchildren, and her other dogs that she couldn’t bear the thought of putting him through another adoption process.

It was the only logical choice because Karen now couldn’t envision her life without this little dog who overcame all odds to become a joyful companion.

“They always say things happen for a reason, and that’s undeniably true. My family needed Joey. I never anticipated he would turn out to be such a sweet and intelligent dog. I can’t wait to see where this journey leads us,” Karen expressed.
