Grab your tissues and prepare for an emotional journey because it’s about to get real! Meet Sammy, a recently adopted dog in a lovely home in Nevada, who impacts everyone around him. This lovable Lab mix stands as a hero and an inspiration, motivating us all to face our challenges head-on.
In the past couple of years, Sammy’s health faced significant hurdles, yet he continued to inspire with his resilient spirit, gaining national recognition along the way.
His New Family Made A Promise

Ruth Gentry and her son, Roan, were heartbroken after losing their two senior dogs (aged 15 and 17) within weeks of each other. They searched for solace, feeling a deep void. That’s when Sammy came into their lives.
While browsing through rescue pages for a new furry companion, Ruth immediately noticed this charming pup. Excitedly, she and Roan drove to Churchill Animal Protection Society in Nevada, where they met Sammy. Within minutes, it was evident he was the perfect match, bringing smiles back to their faces.

Sammy exuded sweetness from the start, kissing Roan during their first meeting, foreshadowing the joyful moments ahead. Ruth and Roan promised to love, cherish, and never abandon him.
However, tragedy struck when Sammy became injured and developed a limp during playtime. A veterinary exam revealed he suffered from congenital patella luxation (floating kneecap) in both legs, which likely caused his injury.

“I took him to UC Davis and they found out he has congenital patella luxation (floating kneecap) in both legs. This likely predisposed him to his injury in his left hind leg,” Ruth shared on Facebook. The diagnosis was devastating, and some friends suggested Ruth should give Sammy up due to the time and cost of his medical treatments. But Ruth and Roan stood firm on their promise; they were committed to caring for their new companion.
Ruth enrolled Sammy in UC Davis’ veterinary program to closely monitor his condition. After two unsuccessful surgeries, the vets recommended a wheelchair and physical therapy as the best options, granting Sammy a new lease on life!
Sammy, The Best Doggo Brother

Over the next two years, Sammy adapted wonderfully to his new lifestyle. Even in his wheelchair, he radiated joy and continued to enjoy his favorite activities with Roan by his side during countless cuddle sessions. Sammy even received prosthetic knee braces to assist him around the house, becoming a source of endless smiles and comfort for his family.
Recently, Roan was diagnosed with dyslexia and enrolled in a tutoring program. In his time of need, Sammy became a steadfast companion, sitting by his side for encouragement during his studies.
Sammy has an incredible ability to sense when Roan is struggling. He instantly transitions into “therapist mode,” providing the comfort his brother needs during tough moments.
“Everyday Sammy is at my son’s side for his tutoring. When he comes exhausted from school and needs to lie down for a bit, Sammy is there,” Ruth stated in an Instagram post.

Sammy is truly exceptional. Though not professionally trained as a therapy dog, his natural caregiving abilities shine through. Ruth is even considering formal training for him in the future.
“Sammy has a way about him that calms my son like nothing I have ever seen. This is why I know Sammy will make a great therapy dog someday. Maybe his mission is to work with kids,” Ruth shared. One thing remains certain—the bond between Sammy and Roan is unbreakable.
