Bear indeed was a good boy. Unfortunately, he was with owners who never acknowledged his value. His life was filled with sadness, yet being brought to the shelter marked a turning point.
In fact, Bear’s future lit up when he arrived at the Animal Friends Of The Valleys in Wildomar, California, where he finally heard those lovely words: You’re a good boy, Bear.
The First Time He Was Told He’s Good
When people continuously tell you who you are, you start to believe it. Bear had never heard anything kind; he was always pushed aside, yelled at, and made to feel worthless. Naturally, he started believing that was true.
When rescuers discovered Bear, he was at a local Chick-fil-A in Wildomar, foraging for food around their trash bins. He was in poor health, seriously neglected, and yearning for affection.
Bear was a dog with a shattered spirit. If only someone could bring joy back into his life.
Things were tough for Bear at the shelter, leading him to feel even more despondent. Being in a room filled with dogs that share similar fates doesn’t lend to happiness; it makes you fear that the sadness might never end.
Fortunately for this handsome Vizsla, the outlook wasn’t entirely bleak. When you’re at rock bottom, there’s only one way to go—up towards better days. Rocky Kanaka entered Bear’s life, promising a brighter future.
Bear became part of Rocky’s initiative, “Sitting With Dogs.” This program is designed to help anxious dogs with traumatic pasts gradually desensitize, resocialize, and heal.
Rocky approached Bear with patience. Just by looking at Bear, it was evident that he had endured a lot and had been a frequent visitor to shelters, evident by his kennel nose, which resulted from pressing against kennel bars.
Rocky started giving Bear treats, one after another. This initial act began to dissolve Bear’s walls, helping him feel more at ease. He got up from the corner, began to explore, and even licked Rocky with affection.
Bear was brimming with love and was looking for someone to share it with. Rocky was that someone.
For the first time ever, Bear’s demeanor changed the moment Rocky called him a good boy.
In the middle of Rocky’s video, Bear was affectionately called a good boy, to which he responded with a joyful tail wag, perked ears, and a glimmer in his eyes. He felt the weight of those words. Bear had known he was a good boy all along.
He simply needed someone to remind him.
Bear did not allow his past traumas to define his life. While malnourished and neglected, his physical and emotional scars began to heal.
Rocky was confident that with some tender care, Bear would be the perfect adoption candidate.

Bear not only gained a human dad, but also a little sister, a new name, and a fresh beginning.
When Bear’s new dad, Mats, spotted him at the shelter and later watched Rocky’s video, he knew he had to bring Bear home. Being a former Vizsla owner, Mats understood how to care for this incredible breed. Under the right care, Bear, now Shadow, began to flourish.
Shadow’s transformation was noticeable within just two weeks of living with the Mets. He had reinvented himself—a brand-new dog ready to start over.
With the support of Mats and his sister, a Husky named Sigyn, Shadow became an online sensation. His video with Rocky received millions of views as everyone witnessed his reaction to hearing the beautiful words: you’re a good boy, Bear.
Shadow Moon now enjoys a delightful life filled with playful antics. His owner frequently tells him he’s a good boy, reinforcing the love he always deserved. This dog has traveled such a remarkable journey from suffering to finally hearing that he’s a good boy.
