Watch This Adorable Pup’s Fur Change Over Time Due to a Genetic Trait!

Date:

You might already be aware that human hair tends to undergo changes over time.

If you were born with light blonde hair, there’s a significant chance that as you transition from infancy to childhood, your hair may darken by a few shades.

The same pattern is observed in many adults. As you age, it becomes increasingly noticeable that your formerly rich dark hair is now turning gray. Personally, I find gray hair beautiful… there’s something exceptionally distinctive about it.

So, imagine my astonishment when I learned that our canine companions can experience similar changes!

Out With The Dark, In With The Gray

Every dog owner recognizes that their pups can’t remain puppies forever. As dogs mature, they shed their youthful traits and blossom into the most handsome and beautiful companions.

Although minor changes in their fur are anticipated, some pet parents observe that the coats of their beloved pets appear significantly altered.

One pet owner decided to reveal to the world just how different her dog had become.

In a TikTok video that has since become viral, the owner first showcases her dog at just one year old. He is incredibly cute, with stunning chocolate-colored fur. The second clip reveals the dog looking a bit different.

Now nearly three years old, the pup has seemingly traded his dark, luxurious fur for a lighter shade.

It’s no surprise that social media users adored the transformation.

One user shared her own experience, commenting: “My baby yorkie went from black to gray in one year lol.”

Another user remarked on their similar situation: “That’s mine right now, he started black but he’s slowly turning ice gray just like his dad. It’s pretty wild.”

One commentator speculated if stress was the cause: “Awe. Our doodles look the exact same. I thought my kids were just stressing him out and that’s why he was turning gray.”

What Is Happening?

Fortunately, there’s a valid explanation for this phenomenon – the color-fading gene.

This intriguing genetic characteristic is primarily associated with progressive graying, where a dog’s coat lightens or fades with age.

Controlled by a dominant gene referred to as the G gene, the production of melanin decreases significantly. As a result, there is a gradual loss of pigment, leading to lighter fur shades as the dog develops.

This change frequently occurs in breeds like the Poodle, the Old English Sheepdog, and certain Terrier breeds.

It’s essential to note that the color-fading gene does not pose any harm to dogs. The change in coat color is a purely cosmetic genetic change and does not cause any physical discomfort, pain, or health complications.

So, if you observe such a transformation in your pup, rest assured – it’s entirely natural!
