A year has passed since they made their entrance into the world, unwanted and shunned by all.
It’s been over 365 days of anticipating the home, the human, and the joy that was promised to them since birth.
Two siblings, a brother and a sister named Smiley and Sephora, are still waiting.
But how much longer will this wait continue?
How many more birthdays must they commemorate within the shelter’s walls? Though shelter staff strive to provide love, nothing compares to having your own hooman or hoodad.
Smiley and Sephora remain patiently at All Humane Animal Rescue in Wanaque, New Jersey.

A Brother And A Sister And A Yin-Yang Situation
Initially, there were four of them, born into a dreadful environment shrouded in neglect. Lysa Lyn from All Humane Animal Rescue Wanaque, New Jersey, discovered them when they were just four months old. Two siblings quickly found homes, but Smiley and Sephora remained.
No one seemed interested in adopting the Australian Cattle Dog duo who were left behind, and time slipped away as they began to feel comfortable in the shelter.
Lyn and her team at the shelter did everything they could to transform these feral pups into loving companions. And indeed, they made the most of their time.
Sephora blossomed into a lovely Cattle girl, although she is a bit timid around males. She is friendly but needs a little patience. Ideally, she would thrive in a home with another male dog, such as her brother, Smiley.
In contrast, Smiley is the life of the party. He’s a playful pup with an infectious personality. The ultimate family companion – a yang to Sephora’s yin.
Despite their different appearances and personalities, Smiley and Sephora are at their happiest when they are together. They exemplify the idea that opposites attract.
It’s My Turn Now
As winter approached, great news arrived at the All Humane shelter: Smiley was going to be adopted!
He was overjoyed, hardly able to believe that someone wanted him as their pet, a loving companion, and a loyal friend.
However, Smiley’s excitement was short-lived. He soon faced the painful reality: he was being adopted alone, without his sister, Sephora.
There was nothing that could be done. The potential adopters were only interested in Smiley, and he had to pursue his destiny and dreams.
Once more, Sephora was left behind, heartbroken for the umpteenth time in her brief life.
Her first birthday turned bittersweet, with a mix of joy and sorrow. She was left without her favorite sidekick – her brother Smiley.
And she’s still waiting for her forever family.
Smiley was fortunate enough to find his permanent home. Now, it’s Sephora’s time. Instead of remaining a long-term resident at the shelter, Sephora should be recognized as the charming Cattle girl who captures everyone’s heart.
She once had a potential adopter, but it fell through for reasons unknown.
Sephora deserves a chance. Every dog in the shelter does.
