For big-hearted rescuers, every day brings new challenges. Navigating the dangers of saving precious lives and enduring the emotional toll of heartbreaking situations takes a lot of courage. Staff members at a non-profit organization in Othello, Washington, longed for a break from these heavy moments, but an unexpected incident would once again test their resolve.
The team discovered an abandoned cardboard box on the sidewalk near their rescue center. They instinctively knew something was wrong, and their fears were confirmed when they looked inside.
So Many Helpless Babies

Upon spotting the cardboard box labeled, “Found on HWY 17,” the Adams County Pet Rescue team rushed over, only to find their hearts shatter at the sight of helpless furry babies inside. Despite their sadness, anger and frustration surged within them.
“I think that was the general response from everyone here that day,” Anita Plancarte, a rescue staff member, recounted to The Dodo. “‘Not again.’”
Inside the box were seven 9-week-old puppies, confusedly curled up in their makeshift home. The dedicated staff had to act swiftly, despite being unprepared for this moment.

Despite their fears, the staff knew they had no choice but to bring the puppies inside and provide care. The little ones had likely faced a lot, making it challenging for them to trust their new rescuers at first, but fortunately, everything went smoothly.
“They seemed a little, tiny bit … maybe scared?” Anita reflected. “But not in an aggressive way or trying to bite people. They’re just unsure.” Fortunately, the experienced team knew the best approach to help the puppies settle in.
“Be Part Of The Solution!”
These brave rescuers faced the daunting task of caring for the seven puppies amidst low supplies of essentials, including wet food and puppy kibble. They appealed to their community for donations through a Facebook post, sharing their disappointment and urging others to prevent such situations from occurring.
“Crazy things happen to us all the time! We could choose not to share these experiences or we can make them known. We do this so people can understand why we are at capacity, why it takes so long to assist those on the waiting list, and why our teams are burned out along with every shelter staff in Washington state!”
“Be part of the solution!” they concluded. Thankfully, the seven puppies are now safe and have a promising future ahead. However, this situation highlights the need for community awareness and action to prevent future heartbreak.
