Bringing a dog into your life is a significant decision. From the moment they join our families, they become cherished members, deserving of our commitment through thick and thin. It’s disheartening to see many dog owners abandon their furry companions when they age and require extra love and care. Senior dogs feel the sting of betrayal and heartache, particularly when they’ve been left by the very people they trusted the most.
Take Princess, a senior Poodle who knows firsthand the pain of abandonment. She was left discarded with all her belongings packed in shopping bags outside the Animal Western League of Alexandria in Virginia. Upon finding her, the shelter staff was devastated to discover a note from her previous owners requesting that she be euthanized and her belongings donated afterward.
Left And Betrayed
Confused and heartbroken, Princess found herself expecting her family to return, missing the love and security of home. The shelter staff took her to a veterinarian, where she was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease and estimated to be around 16 years old. Due to a lack of resources at the shelter for her medical needs, she was transferred to Miri’s Haven Senior Dog Rescue in Virginia.
Receiving The Love And Care She Needed
The dedicated rescue staff worked tirelessly to show Princess love and compassion, which allowed her to gradually open up to them. Despite her age and medical challenges, she needed hospice care but thankfully felt no pain. It took time for her to heal emotionally from the shock of abandonment, yet the staff recognized her needs and continued to offer her affection and cuddles, which led to remarkable progress in her condition.

Princess thrived under the warmth of a hospice foster who showered her with love, giving her the care she truly deserved. Recognizing her progress, the rescue staff began to believe she was not just a hospice case but could find a forever home with loving parents. It fills me with joy knowing that she is cherished and well-cared for, and I have no doubt that this sweet senior pup will find a family who will love and treasure her for the remainder of her days.
