While driving through a West Virginia neighborhood, Dareth, a rescue advocate, encountered a heartbreaking sight: a sad dog tied up outside a home. Standing in the snow, he shivered from the cold, looking around with a plea for help. Unable to shake the image of the dog, later named Buddy, Dareth reached out to animal control, hoping for a rescue.
Refusing To Give Up On Buddy
However, animal control informed her that, unfortunately, it was legal to keep a dog chained in West Virginia. Unwilling to walk away from Buddy, Dareth began speaking with his neighbors to gather more information. They revealed that Buddy had spent thirteen years chained outside, with one neighbor even cutting a hole in the fence to feed him. Though he managed to escape a couple of times, he would always return, only to be mistreated by his owners again.
Hearing about the miserable life Buddy led, Dareth decided to speak with his owners to convince them to surrender him. Despite her efforts and knocking on their door for two days, she received no response. Feeling desperate, she ultimately took Buddy with her, and he melted in her arms as she petted him.
Buddy was deeply grateful for the rescue. Dareth took him to the vet, where he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and a severe urinary tract infection. The vet couldn’t determine Buddy’s age due to his severely worn teeth from years of chewing on the metal chain.
Living The Life Of His Dreams
After sharing Buddy’s story on Facebook, he caught the attention of Dareth’s friend’s parents, retirees who were considering adopting a senior dog. Realizing they could help, Dareth was elated, knowing they would provide an amazing home for Buddy. Though he struggled to adjust initially, having lived outside his whole life, his new parents patiently fed him by hand when he refused to eat from his bowl. Gradually, Buddy regained his confidence, realizing he was cherished and that life could be wonderful.
Buddy is now a beloved member of his family, always by their side. He enjoys walks, car rides, and, most of all, lounging on his soft bed and playing with his stuffed toys. A heartfelt thank you goes to Dareth for rescuing Buddy from neglect and giving him a chance at happiness.
