Wandering through the streets in search of food, stray dogs often find themselves in a constant battle against hunger.
Each day spent on the streets gives them hope that someone might come to save them and offer a safe place to call home.
Tanner was one such stray pup. While he roamed the streets of Houston, Texas, he eagerly awaited the chance for someone to rescue him.
That moment finally arrived, and Tanner was taken to a local shelter. The shelter staff was delighted to learn that he was a truly special dog.
A Loving Dog Finds Himself on the Euthanasia List
Since arriving at the shelter, Tanner dreamed of finding a loving family. Unfortunately, three weeks went by without a single adoption.
The shelter was overcrowded, leading to Tanner’s name being placed on the euthanasia list.
Local dog advocate Madeline Garvis Smith visited Tanner, and she was immediately taken by the loving pup who embraced her with the sweetest hugs.
He captured her heart, prompting her to do everything possible to ensure his survival.
“He was a bundle of love, almost desperate for attention. Putting him back in his kennel was gut-wrenching, knowing how lonely he was. I’ve met many dogs, but some stand out more than others, and Tanner was one of those,” shared Garvis Smith.
On her Instagram, Garvis Smith highlighted Tanner’s plight on August 26, 2023, aiming to let everyone know about this adorable pup in need of a chance.
Tanner was affectionate with every volunteer he encountered. He would leap into their laps, yearning for more love. Despite being just a year old, he enjoyed being cradled like a baby.
Rescuing Tanner’s Life
Garvis Smith put out an urgent request for a local foster family to take Tanner in temporarily.
Fortunately, Kari, a foster mom, saw Tanner’s story and eagerly volunteered to take him home.
As it was time to leave the shelter, Tanner bid farewell to his friends there with gentle hugs, as if he wished to express his gratitude for their kindness.
Stepping outside with his new foster mom, he began to wag his tail, clearly excited and happy.
When Tanner hopped into the car with Kari, she showered him with kisses. It was a moment of pure joy and relief, knowing this sweet dog was saved.
Upon arriving at his foster home, Tanner was initially a bit timid. However, once he sensed the love and care from his foster family, he began to seek their affection, soaking up all the love he could receive.
Soon, Tanner will be transferred to the Animal Rescue Network of New England in New Hampshire, where he will wait for his forever family to find him.
I have no doubt that this sweet boy will soon find his perfect match. He has an abundance of love to offer, and whoever adopts him will be thrilled to receive his gentle hugs every single day.
