Meet Kenna, a gentle dog who arrived at the Promise 4 Paws rescue in Orange County, California, after being abandoned by her former owner and left to fend for herself on the streets.
When she was rescued, Kenna was frightened, unsure, infested with ticks, and heavily pregnant.
X-rays confirmed that Kenna was expecting three puppies. Luckily, she was placed in a caring environment where people were committed to her safety and comfort.
Anticipating the Arrival of Puppies
Kenna was placed with a wonderful foster home run by Suzie Graf, who supported her throughout the delivery of her puppies.
At first, Kenna was fearful and cautious around people, but with the love and care from her compassionate foster mom, she slowly began to trust again.
Understanding the trauma she had faced, they opted to approach her healing one day at a time, offering her the support she needed.
After two weeks in her foster home, Kenna welcomed three adorable puppies into the world.
“We would like to introduce you to Koa, Nalu, and Luana, who arrived this morning. Their beautiful earthy hues surely reflect their delightful personalities. Mama Kenna is doing wonderfully and keeping her pups close,” posted Kenna’s foster mom on Facebook here.
One of Kenna’s puppies, Nalu, was born without fur, leading the rescue team to speculate that the father might be a Shar-Pei.
Regardless, Kenna proved to be an excellent mother, dedicating herself to caring for her little ones. She became visibly distressed even during short separations from them.
When the puppies were just eight days old, Kenna required surgery at San Juan Animal Hospital as she had not expelled all three placentas, a situation that could pose risks to her health.
Fortunately, the procedure was successful, and Kenna returned home quickly to care for her puppies.
Finding Their Forever Families
As the puppies flourished and grew stronger, their eyes opened, and they began exploring their surroundings.
It was a heartwarming sight to see them develop in an affectionate environment, finally receiving the love they deserve.
“We’ve identified the breeds of Kenna’s puppies. Luana and Koa are a mix of Goldendoodle and Terrier, while Nalu is a Shar-Pei/Dachshund/Terrier,” Graf shared on Facebook.
At the age of eight weeks, the puppies were ready to embark on their journeys to their forever homes.
Nalu, the adorable Shar-Pei mix, found a lovely home with a young man named Vicente Germann, where he will enjoy countless adventures. The other two puppies were also adopted into incredible families.
The first few days without her puppies were exceptionally tough for Kenna, who felt sad and forlorn.
“Her puppies have moved on to their forever homes, and Kenna is truly heartbroken. I’ve never seen a dog so despondent. We’re showering her with love and support,” Graf noted.
After ten days, Kenna gradually resumed eating, playing with other dogs, and relishing life.
Eventually, Kenna was adopted by her foster mother, officially joining the Graf family in San Clemente, California, where she now enjoys the company of seven other dogs.
“She is a delightful little pup,” remarked her forever mom.
Kenna’s journey transformed from being abandoned on the streets, devoid of care, to becoming a cherished member of a loving furry family.
