Reflecting on past experiences as a dog owner, one aspect I wish to forget is the fear my dog felt during certain moments.
While there were few things he truly detested, such as fireworks, his reaction was heartbreaking. He became almost immobile with fear, lost and unsure of what to do.
He’d huddle close to the wall, trying to escape the overwhelming sensations. We always aimed to support him, yet responding to such intense fear proved challenging.
Fear can be irrational, and often, not much can be done to alleviate it. Nonetheless, dog fear of humans is a different issue altogether.
We sometimes unintentionally provide them with reasons to fear us, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
This narrative discusses a pit bull named Poppy, who was so terrified of people that she’d do her best to avoid them until she found incredible foster parents.
A Very Frightened Pittie

Upon first meeting her new foster mom, Michelle, Poppy was immersed in fear.
She lacked trust in humans, and it took time for this to change, but her new caretakers dedicated themselves to her comfort.
During their initial encounter, Michelle saw Poppy being wheeled in a cart, her gaze fixated downward.
She recounted to The Dodo: “She was hunched over, trying to become invisible. It was truly a heart-wrenching moment.”

Once they brought her home to California, significant adjustments had to be made to help Poppy settle in.
She was provided ample room to roam, yet the frightened dog remained hidden in her kennel.
After several days, a transformation began to take place; Michelle observed Poppy venture out to nuzzle her head into her lap.
This delightful behavior marked a significant milestone: she was beginning to trust humans. Overwhelmed with joy, Michelle couldn’t hold back her tears.
Poppy Is Changing So Much

Next came the challenge of encouraging Poppy to engage with the outside world—a difficult task. Michelle remarked: “Whenever a leash was brought out, she would retreat to a corner.”
It took persistence, but eventually, Michelle succeeded in reassuring Poppy, allowing her mother to secure the leash. Soon after, Poppy enjoyed her first short walk, finally experiencing a bit of freedom.
Michelle quickly realized that Poppy thrived in the company of other dogs, a promising sign of her social development.
Throughout their time together, Poppy underwent a remarkable transformation; she became increasingly sociable and loved to frolic with everyone. Although she remained a bit anxious, her progress was evident.

Unfortunately, Poppy’s time with Michelle was soon over, as she was moved to a different foster home. This change left Michelle emotional, yet she recognized it was for Poppy’s greater good.
Michelle shared: “Upon reaching Rylee’s residence, she tried to flee when we escorted her to the door, indicating she was still quite apprehensive.”
Upon arrival, Poppy encountered her new best friend, Oak, and they instantly formed a strong bond. From that moment on, they were inseparable.

Rylee took her on adventures to explore various locations throughout California, sending Michelle video updates that showcased Poppy’s ongoing development.
Ultimately, when the time came to determine Poppy’s fate, Rylee couldn’t bear to part with her, resulting in a foster fail.
Rylee officially adopted this sweet pittie, and now Poppy enjoys her life to the fullest with a loving sibling and a nurturing mom.
