The Surprising Story of an Abandoned Dog Guarding a Box by the Road

Date:

James Allen, a resident of Tennessee, regularly commutes down the same rural road in Dickson County for work.

This route is so familiar to him that he can navigate it with ease. However, one day, something unusual caught his attention, prompting him to hit the brakes abruptly.

By the roadside stood a frail, distressed dog, fiercely guarding a cardboard box marked “eggs.”

James had an instinctive feeling that there was something more inside that box…

A Box Of Surprises

The sorrowful expression on the dog’s face revealed everything to James. It was clear she had been abandoned by someone she once considered family.

As he approached the large cardboard box, he was taken aback to discover it contained five adorable puppies.

“I drive that road almost every day, and the box was not there yesterday; the lid was closed as evident in the picture, meaning the pups couldn’t escape. Moreover, it was so new that there was no waste at the bottom of the box,” James shared with Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue.

Everything fell into place. The older, thin dog was indeed their mother, guarding her young ones and patiently waiting for her family to return.

“Mom was gazing up the road as if hoping to see her family return,” a representative from Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue shared with The Dodo.

Concerned for the well-being of the mother and her pups, James quickly posted pictures online in hopes of finding help.

Fortunately, the compassionate team at Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue in Nashville, TN, saw the post and contacted James, promising to assist the dog and her puppies.

A Safe Haven

Later that same day, the mother and her five puppies were sheltered at the rescue.

“These pups and their mom are now safe with us, but it is troubling to consider that such cruelty and ignorance exists in our midst,” the rescue expressed in their Facebook post.

They provided the entire furry family with a cozy bed and plenty of food, while they plan to find them loving homes.

Unfortunately, cases like this happen far too often in Dickson County, and although the rescuers were not surprised, it still broke their hearts.

“Regrettably, these incidents are all too common in this area. Even though the frequency of these occurrences is exhausting, they infuriate and sadden me deeply,” said a representative to The Dodo.

While the puppies are now safe, the rescue organization is actively searching for the individual who callously abandoned them and will endeavor to pursue legal action.

“Someone in Dickson County knows who the owner is. Please message us!” the rescue urged their followers.

Thanks to James Allen’s quick thinking, this resilient family is now safe at the rescue, and we can only hope they no longer have to worry about their future.
