While animals are often capable of taking care of themselves, there are times when they need our assistance. Facing the struggles of life on the unforgiving streets can lead them into challenging situations. Sometimes, fellow animals can lend a paw, but at other times, it requires the intervention of their human counterparts.
Fortunately, many compassionate individuals are ready to do whatever it takes to ensure that our furry friends receive the quality of life they deserve.
Rescue Mission

While taking out her trash, Cassie Jo, a resident of Austin, Texas, heard unusual cries and quickly realized they were coming from a puppy. Upon further investigation, she found a small Jack Russell puppy tangled in chicken wire and trapped in a storm drain.
Acting swiftly, Jo contacted her apartment’s maintenance team to help free the pup, but despite their efforts, they were unable to succeed. Concerned about the puppy’s safety, they reached out to the local citizen hotline, only to learn that assistance could take as long as 24 to 48 hours. Recognizing the urgency, they decided to call the Austin Fire Department.
Help Is On The Way
The Austin Fire Department quickly assembled their gear and rushed to the scene. “The puppy, affectionately named Poinsettia, was slipping deeper into the drain until one firefighter bravely climbed down and successfully rescued her,” shared Austin Pets Alive in a post on Facebook.

After her rescue, the sweet puppy was taken in by the Austin Animal Center and subsequently transferred to Austin Pets Alive (APA!) for a thorough medical assessment. “Although Poinsettia was safe, her journey was just beginning. Shortly after arriving atAustin Animal Center, she began having seizures. Now, Poinsettia is fighting for her life with the assistance of our medical team – and we’re fighting alongside her. But we can only succeed with your help!” they stated.
The APA! placed Poinsettia on medication to manage her seizures and antibiotics to treat her infections. Despite being concerned about a potential leg injury, the medical team found no signs of pain or lameness, so Poinsettia was on her way to recovery. Recognizing that her initial care costs would be around $500, the Austin shelter took this moment to highlight the critical need for donations.

“With December already halfway through, we urgently need your support to help pets like Poinsettia overcome their challenges. Remember, your contribution is MATCHED up to $100,000 right now! Will you assist pets like her today and ensure that your gift is generously doubled?” they urged.
