It’s no secret that animal shelters across the United States are struggling. According to Forbes, approximately 6.3 million animals enter US shelters annually, yet only 4.1 million find homes. The rest remain in kennels, longing for companionship and wondering why they are overlooked.
A small family left abandoned by a busy road faced a similar fate, questioning why their owner had so heartlessly discarded them without regard for their safety.
Everything Will Be Just Fine
Fortunately, they were rescued by the dedicated team at Three Little Pitties Rescue in Texas. “It was heartbreaking. They were crammed into a tiny, filthy kennel left on a sidewalk. Persephone was tied to the kennel by a leash, unable to help her babies,” recounted Melissa Fears, the rescue’s founder, during an interview.
The situation was dire as the pups endured days in such conditions, with not a single passerby stopping to assist. Help finally came when a good Samaritan contacted the shelter, leading to their rescue.
While the reason for their abandonment remains unclear, Fears has her theories. “Our best guess is that Persephone’s owner didn’t spay her, and when she had puppies, it became too overwhelming. Sadly, it’s common for pregnant or nursing dogs to be dumped when owners feel they can’t manage,” she explained.
Upon their arrival at the shelter, the staff immediately reached out to Alexis, inquiring if she could foster the pups. Without hesitation, she welcomed them into her home, starting a new chapter in their lives.
At The Fosters
Due to their poor condition, it was evident that the pups were quite sick, with one even in critical condition. Fears described, “The sickest puppy couldn’t even stand; her body temperature was around 90°F, while the normal range is 101-102°F. Her gums, ears, and belly were almost white. We honestly feared for her survival that first night, as she was so fragile that even the gentlest touch caused her to whimper.”
Fortunately, one puppy was in better health, bringing a sense of relief to the rescuers. After a challenging recovery, all the pups made remarkable progress, and it became clear that they would enjoy happy and healthy lives.
Now, the focus is on finding a loving forever home for these adorable pups.
“The puppies would thrive in an active household or with someone who can match their energetic nature. They require love, patience, and a touch of training to help them become the best companions they can be,” Fears shared.
As for their mother, Fears believes she would flourish in a home with another male dog, as she is incredibly well-behaved and a fiercely loyal companion.
