After a very stormy night in San Antonio, SA Animal Care Services staff arrived early to work only to find a mysterious green tarp in their parking lot. Immediately concerned, they approached the tarp to investigate. When they lifted the soaking wet tarp, their hearts sank a little bit as six eyes looked at them in utter confusion and terror.
A Trio Of Dogs Abandoned In The Rain
Abandoned in cages and left in the rain were two German Shepherds and a small Chihuahua. These innocent pups were heartlessly dumped in terrible weather, completely terrified and unable to comprehend why they were deserted by someone they likely considered family.
Lisa Norwood, the public relations manager for the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, shared with The Dodo:
“Anytime something like this happens, we’re sad and a little frustrated. We had been experiencing a spate of strong thunderstorms, and I can only imagine their fear with the traffic going by coupled with the heavy rain and thunder.”
Once the staff realized the dogs were underneath the tarp, they quickly called for backup and transported the terrified pups to the shelter. They provided a warm place, food, and water for them.
One German Shepherd was named Peaches, the other Cyrus, and the small Chihuahua pup was named Gabby. Initially, both Peaches and Gabby were calmer and easier to handle, whilst Cyrus was particularly frightened and required more time to adjust, which is understandable given the trauma he experienced.
Finding Their Forever Home
Norwood mentioned to The Dodo, “Both Peaches and Gabby seemed a little more calm and were easier to handle. Cyrus was very frightened by the whole experience and took some time to warm up to everybody.” The situation for stray animals in San Antonio is increasingly alarming, with shelters becoming overcrowded on a daily basis.
They even addressed the public through theirInstagram profile, stating:
“Innocent pups abandoned under a tarp in the rain… roaming pets terrorizing neighborhood children… shelter kennels filled to the brim with unwanted pets… This is just a taste of what Animal Care Services struggles with day after day. This is the reality of our municipal animal shelter.”
While struggling with overcapacity and the plight of strays, San Antonio Animal Care Services recognized that the dogs couldn’t stay in the shelter for long. Fortunately, Peaches and Gabby were swiftly adopted, whereas Cyrus needed additional time to recuperate before finding his forever home.
Cyrus was eventually transferred to the German Shepherd Rescue of NY, Inc, a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing German Shepherds from euthanasia. Fortunately, Cyrus was also adopted shortly after, according to updates from the GSRNY’s Facebook page.
We are thrilled that these sweet dogs have finally found their happily ever after, and we hope they will never face abandonment and the associated terror again.
