It’s truly heart-wrenching to witness a dog in distress. Understanding that their fear stems from a series of traumatic experiences only deepens the sorrow. Raoul, unfortunately, never experienced the bright side of life; he endured a harsh existence cramped in a trailer with over thirty other dogs, fighting to survive while lacking basic needs like socialization and affection. So, when help finally arrived, Raoul was utterly shocked.
Raoul Never Felt A Loving Touch

Thanks to SPCA of Texas, Raoul and many of his fellow companions were rescued from their dire situation. Due to his distressing condition, Raoul was promptly taken to Hearts & Bones Rescue in New York City and Dallas, Texas. Fortunately, Raoul found refuge with a foster named Whitney, who embraced him wholeheartedly.
“Raoul is one of 36 animals that was seized from a deplorable situation in Texas,” Whitney shared on Instagram.

However, things were more complex than anticipated. Raoul was not only terrified but also constantly shaking in his small crate. Every attempt Whitney made to engage with him resulted in him trembling more. “He’s just so, so scared and has had very little human contact until he was rescued,” she added. Raoul avoided eye contact and hid behind larger dogs, desperately trying to distance himself from human presence. For the first week and a half, he remained in his crate, observing his new surroundings cautiously while Whitney developed a gradual approach to help him feel secure.
She gently addressed him, offered treats, respected his boundaries, and made sure her movements were predictable. Whitney understood that taking gradual steps with Raoul was essential for his comfort.
He’s Finally Trusting Again

On the 10th day of his stay with Whitney, Raoul made significant progress. He ventured out of his crate and accepted treats from Whitney’s hand, even stopping his shaking, which signified a newfound sense of trust. Whitney was overjoyed; witnessing Raoul’s transformation was an extraordinary gift, the miracle she had hoped for.
As the following weeks unfolded, Raoul continued to blossom. He began playing with others, allowing people to hold him, and enjoyed adorable cuddle sessions with Whitney. He was finally engaging in all the joyful “doggo things,” and it was a heartwarming sight!

Raoul even allowed his foster mom to give him a wonderful bath. He is now learning to appreciate life’s simple pleasures, ready to embark on a brand new adventure!
“He’s shown his potential in the short amount of time we’ve had with him, and I know that once he finds his permanent spot, he’s going to be amazing,” Whitney stated.
Raoul quickly stole the hearts of those who met him. Months later, he found a wonderful forever home in NYC and is set to begin a new life journey.
No longer the fearful dog with an uncertain future, Raoul now has everything he ever dreamed of!
