After a stormy night in San Antonio, SA Animal Care Services staff arrived early to find a mysterious green tarp in their parking lot. Concerned, they lifted the soaked tarp to discover what was hiding beneath it, and their hearts sank a little bit.
Six eyes looked up at them in utter confusion and terror…
A Trio Of Dogs Abandoned In The Rain
Two German Shepherds and a small Chihuahua were abandoned in cages, left vulnerable in the rain beneath this green tarp, terrified and confused about why their family would leave them like this.
Lisa Norwood, the public relations manager for the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, shared with The Dodo, “Anytime something like this happens, we’re sad and a little frustrated. We had been experiencing a spate of strong thunderstorms, and I can only imagine their fear with the traffic going by coupled with the heavy rain and thunder.”
Upon realizing the dogs were under the tarp, staff quickly called for backup and transported the frightened animals to the shelter. They were immediately provided with warmth, food, and water.
One German Shepherd was named Peaches, the other Cyrus, while the little Chihuahua was named Gabby.
Finding Their Forever Home
Norwood reported to The Dodo, “Both Peaches and Gabby seemed a little more calm and were easier to handle. Cyrus was very frightened by the whole experience and took some time to warm up to everybody.”
The poor Cyrus was traumatized and needed time to recover from the incident.
The situation with stray animals in San Antonio is becoming increasingly dire, with animal shelters overcrowded with abandoned pets daily. They posted on their Instagram profile:
“Innocent pups abandoned under a tarp in the rain… roaming pets terrorizing neighborhood children… shelter kennels filled to the brim with unwanted pets… This is just a taste of what Animal Care Services struggles with day after day. This is the reality of our municipal animal shelter.”
Due to the overwhelming number of strays, the shelter knew the dogs couldn’t remain there for long.
Fortunately, Peaches and Gabby were quickly adopted. Cyrus needed more time to heal and find his forever home, so he was transferred to the German Shepherd Rescue of NY, Inc, a non-profit dedicated to saving GSDs from euthanasia.
According to the GSRNY’s Facebook page, the sweet boy Cyrus was adopted soon after.
We are thrilled that these sweet dogs have found their forever homes and hope they will never experience such terror again.
