Napoleon, a 3-year-old Pit Bull mix, was often spotted wandering the streets of Cleveland, Texas, particularly near a gas station parking lot, where he survived on scraps. After learning about this stray dog, a local shelter stepped in to help.
Help Is On The Way
Upon his rescue, the team promptly took him to the vet for an extensive examination, where he was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia, causing his organs to shift into his chest. The only solution was urgent surgery, and the rescue team called for donations through their Facebook page.
Such hernias often arise from blunt force trauma, and it’s heartbreaking to think of what Napoleon endured alone on the streets. Laura Forma, cofounder of This Is Huston, remarked, “It was one of the worst cases of a diaphragmatic hernia they had seen.” Thankfully, Napoleon bravely survived the surgery.
Road To Recovery
Napoleon began his healing journey at his foster home, and the team from This Is Huston, knowing his strength, stated that he was already ready for his forever home. Although he met a family who fell for him, it was clear that he was still attached to his foster mom.
He did meet a family who fell in love with him, but Napoleon was pretty attached to his foster mom, and it showed during their meet and greet. So, they decided not to move forward.
For nearly a year, Napoleon stayed with his foster mom, patiently waiting for someone to adopt him. Research by 11pets shows that only 27% of adopted dogs are of larger size and often remain in shelters or foster homes for up to 12 months.
That was Napoleon’s story, until he caught the eye of Tina Kempken, who was looking for a new furry friend.
Finally Home
I remember seeing his story and thinking, ‘If he is still around in a few months, when we get a house with a yard, we have to get him,’ said Tina.
Since bringing him home, we have learned he loves romping in the yard and snuggling. He forgets he is almost 90 pounds.
It took some time for Napoleon to adjust to his new life, but once he did, he became the happiest pup ever. Full of love, he quickly formed a bond with Tina’s other dog, Snoopy, becoming the best of friends.
