Texas Rescuers Discover Surprising Contents Underneath a Large Green Tarp at Shelter

Date:

After a stormy night in San Antonio, SA Animal Care Services staff arrived early to find a mysterious green tarp in their parking lot. Concerned, they approached the tarp and lifted it, revealing a heartbreaking sight: two German Shepherds and a small Chihuahua abandoned in cages, terrified and confused in the pouring rain. Lisa Norwood, public relations manager for the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, shared with The Dodo:

“Anytime something like this happens, we’re sad and a little frustrated. We had been experiencing a spate of strong thunderstorms, and I can only imagine their fear with the traffic going by coupled with the heavy rain and thunder.”

Immediately, the staff called for backup and transported the three wet, frightened dogs to the shelter. Once there, they were provided with food and warmth. The German Shepherds were named Peaches and Cyrus, while the Chihuahua was named Gabby.

Finding Their Forever Home

Norwood remarked, “Both Peaches and Gabby seemed a little more calm and were easier to handle. Cyrus was very frightened by the whole experience and took some time to warm up to everybody.” Tragically impacted by their abandonment, Cyrus needed extra time to adjust, while Peaches and Gabby found comfort more quickly.

The situation with stray animals in San Antonio is escalating, with shelters overwhelmed by the constant influx of abandoned pets. They expressed their challenges on their Instagram:

“Innocent pups abandoned under a tarp in the rain… roaming pets terrorizing neighborhood children… shelter kennels filled to the brim with unwanted pets… This is just a taste of what Animal Care Services struggles with day after day.”

Understanding that the dogs couldn’t remain in the overcrowded shelter for long, Peaches and Gabby were adopted quickly, while Cyrus was transferred to the German Shepherd Rescue of NY, Inc. This organization specializes in saving German Shepherds from euthanasia, providing Cyrus the care he needed for a successful transition.

Fortunately, shortly after, Cyrus also found a loving home, as announced on GSRNY’s Facebook page.

We are thrilled that Peaches, Gabby, and Cyrus have finally found their forever homes, hoping they will never have to endure such terror again.
