It has sadly become all too common to see an abandoned dog aimlessly wandering the streets, particularly for those dedicated to rescuing animals. One compassionate rescuer from Houston, Texas, experienced this firsthand one day when she stumbled upon a dumped dog all alone beside a busy road. The unfortunate animal had been cast aside by his family after having spent so long in the comfort of a warm home. Suddenly, he found himself lost, scared, and confused on a harsh street.
Determined To Save Him
Kristin Erwin, the founder of Streetheart Project, a nonprofit rescue in Houston, Texas, knew saving the abandoned dog she saw by the roadside would be challenging. Yet, she was determined to help him and, though unprepared for the rescue that day, softly called out to the dog in hopes he would respond.
Unfortunately, Eggnog, as the dog was named, had lost his trust in humans due to his past experiences, making Kristin’s efforts in vain as he ultimately ran away, leaving her anxious about his fate. Undeterred by her disappointment, Kristin resolved to return the next day, this time armed with a more strategic plan. She posted on social media, expressing her determination to find him and provide him with a loving home.

On her return, Kristin was better prepared with a trap and some irresistible food. She placed the food inside the open trap, hoping to attract Eggnog. After a while, she witnessed success — the hungry dog cautiously approached the trap and, once he deemed it safe, ventured inside to eat. With the trap door shutting behind him, Kristin finally secured Eggnog’s safety.
No Longer A Scared Dog
Kristin was ecstatic to have rescued Eggnog from the streets, but she knew that challenges were still ahead. Though Eggnog showed no aggression upon arriving at his new foster home, his fearful demeanor was evident as he trembled with anxiety. As an experienced rescuer, Kristin understood the importance of patience and allowing him the time and space to trust again.
After several challenging days, Eggnog slowly began to warm up to Kristin, realizing he was in a safe environment with someone who meant him no harm. Eventually, his smile returned, and he transformed into a brand-new dog—following Kristin around with a wagging tail. Though his future remains uncertain, Eggnog is on a promising path, surrounded by caring individuals like Kristin rather than the unkind souls who abandoned him.
