Excited for their trip to Las Vegas, Jared and Kristi Owens packed everything they’d need and rushed to Lubbock airport, expecting a smooth boarding process. However, they were taken aback when they learned that one of their bags was six pounds overweight.
Their Sneaky Chihuahua
As they prepared to board, airport staff informed them that one of their bags had to be checked due to excess weight. Just when they thought the day couldn’t get any more surprising, they discovered something unsettling inside the bag—a smiling face peeking out from Jared’s boot.
This unexpected reveal was their senior Chihuahua, Icky, who had snuck into the bag unnoticed while they packed. Jared and Kristi were understandably shocked. Jared later shared on social media, “You know it’s going to be an epic trip to Vegas when you get to the airport to check your bags….6lbs overweight, and out pops a chihuahua from your boot!! Unreal!” Facebook post.
While taken aback, both found it amusing given Icky’s usual habits. Jared said, “We were dumbfounded and flat shocked and embarrassed, to be honest. She loves to burrow in our laundry baskets, closet, blankets, wherever she can get nice, warm and comfy, and on that day, I guess she chose our suitcase we had left open with clothes in it for hours.” This was shared with FOX 29 News Philadelphia.
Despite their initial surprise, laughter followed when one airport employee found the situation to be amusing rather than embarrassing.
Airport Employee Saves The Day
As their flight to Las Vegas prepared for takeoff, the Owens remained unsure about what to do with Icky. Luckily, airport employee Cathy offered to look after Icky until they returned, which brought them immense relief. Jared expressed his gratitude, stating, “Shout out to Cathy with #southwestairlines for her awesome customer service!! She offered to watch Icky until we got back!!”
In the short time left before departure, Jared was able to contact family friends who promptly came to the airport to pick Icky up and take her back home.
Grateful yet slightly amused by their furry friend’s antics, Jared and Kristi bid farewell to Icky and Cathy, finally embarking on their much-anticipated journey. Despite the unusual twist, they were elated Icky was safe and sound, realizing they’d have a much different experience had she remained hidden in the bag.
