When a Good Samaritan heard unusual noises from a dumpster, they quickly realized it was a dog in distress. Without hesitation, they reached out to the Tullahoma Animal Shelter. Rescuers David Reed and Chris Cabral rushed to the scene, only to be heartbroken by what they discovered inside.
Heartbreaking Scene
At the bottom of the dumpster, the rescuers found a puppy tightly bound in a white trash bag, struggling to breathe and no longer barking. Despite their grim suspicions, Reed and Cabral quickly retrieved the bag with a net. They cautiously cut it open, fearing the worst.
“[H]e was not moving, crying, or barking. When he began to breathe, they called one of our veterinarians for emergency care,” Tullahoma Animal Shelter animal control manager Cheryl Rhoads shared with The Dodo.
The puppy, named Oscar, was rushed to the vet for immediate care, where he received subcutaneous fluids, necessary medications, and a much-needed haircut.
Initially, Oscar weighed six pounds, but after the vets removed the severe mats from his fragile body, his weight was reduced to four and a half pounds. Happily, after being placed in a nurturing environment, Oscar began to thrive.
New Life
Though Oscar is still part of an active investigation regarding his abandonment, he has found a foster family that is dedicated to his recovery. His caregivers report that he has a playful spirit.
“Oscar has some sass! He enjoys burrowing in blankets and prefers to be held on his own terms,” Rhoads added.
Although he isn’t fond of his medications, including eye ointment and treatment for an infection, he loves snuggling into fluffy blankets for his naps. His rescuers are truly delighted to see him transform from a struggling pup to a happy, playful dog.
As the investigation proceeds, it is hoped Oscar will soon be adopted into a loving family. Best of luck, Oscar!

Sadly, Oscar’s story is not unique. Many animals suffer abandonment by their owners, forced to survive alone on the streets. This is not the solution!
