The most effective remedy for fear is undoubtedly love. This rings particularly true in the animal kingdom, where countless four-legged beings confront their deepest fears daily, from abandonment and predators to the dangers of passing vehicles and the threat of abuse. Fortunately, there’s no fear that cannot be eased through a loving touch.
Such was the case for Van Buren, who roamed the streets of California as a timid puppy, unaware that love could replace his fear. But, eventually, it did!
From Daily Visits To A Temporary Home
One fateful day, everything changed for Van Buren while wandering the street he was named after. Mary, a local horse vet from California, stumbled upon him. As a seasoned vet, she quickly recognized Van Buren’s silent plea for help. Though he couldn’t vocalize it, his eyes spoke volumes. Yet, there was one hurdle – he was too fearful to be saved! Mary remained undeterred, spending days on her usual route to bring him food and slowly earning his trust. Over time, Van Buren began to warm up to her. Gradually, they interacted more, culminating in the moment he allowed Mary to pet him for the first time. Shortly thereafter, he even let her put a leash on him.
The next critical step in Van Buren’s journey to recovery was building his trust. Instead of taking him to a shelter, Mary brought him to her horse ranch. This proved to be an excellent decision! Today, Van Buren is a confident and delightful dog!
“She has had him for over a month and has worked with him every day. He’s a lovely dog. He is now vaccinated and neutered. We think he’s approximately 6 months old, likely a lab mix, weighing about 50lbs,” shares Van Buren’s Petfinder profile.
Van Buren Is Looking For A Home

In no time, this adorable dog acquired socialization and obedience skills, making friends with other dogs and animals, and becoming quite fond of people! He treasures both adults and children, making him an ideal family pet. “He’s great with people and other dogs. He truly is a nice dog, perfect for anyone looking for a large companion,” his profile highlights.
For now, he will continue to stay with Mary, appreciating the vastness of her ranch and the wonders of nature. After everything he’s endured, Van Buren is finally feeling safe and cherished, eager to return that love! Nevertheless, what he truly desires is a family and a permanent home. Mary hopes that Van Buren’s future adopters are nearby and ready to offer him a lifetime of joy. He truly deserves to find his place and should never face abandonment again, for he is a treasure filled with love!
