In every classroom, there’s always that one child who captures the most affection. In Boston, that beloved child is undoubtedly Spencer — and his ‘classroom’ stretches across the city!

Rich Powers, a professional photographer and the proud owner of Spencer, established the Boston Marathon tradition years ago, but the tale truly exploded in popularity in 2018.

That year, Spencer made a grand appearance in the rain (which he embraced wholeheartedly) carrying Marathon flags in his mouth, showing unwavering support for all the runners participating in the race. The rest is simply a story of legend!

Since then, Spencer and his Golden sister, Penny, have continued to be part of the Marathon, providing unwavering moral support and undoubtedly stealing the spotlight.

Thrilled to see a dog joyously clutching flags in his mouth and showing support, people eagerly adopted the tradition of capturing photographs with Spencer and sharing them across their social media platforms.

“He became an ‘everyday hero’ that people could relate to because everyone has their own Spencer story in their own lives,” Rich remarked on Instagram.

There was even a time when he received his very own gold medal for being such an affectionate pup! A runner, while stopping to take a picture with him, draped the medal around his neck and decided it was Spencer’s to keep after the photoshoot.

“When he was about to leave without it, I reminded him to take his medal. He said, ‘No, this is for him….keep doing what you’re doing,’” Rich explained.

Spencer has always shone brightly in the spotlight. His unique charm and love for his role made him even more popular! He quickly gained viral fame on social media and even made several television appearances.

Spencer’s unwavering affection for everyone around him was his hallmark!

Sadly, a few years ago, he was diagnosed with a tumor. He endured months battling serious health issues, and there were optimistic moments where it seemed he might overcome them.

However, in September 2022, he received another diagnosis of inoperable cancer, shortening his time on this earth to just a few months. He passed away in 2023 at the age of 13.

Throughout it all, this resilient pup never lost his joyful demeanor. During his most challenging times, Spencer continued to share his love and spirit with those around him.

“His final months were filled with joy, and he remained playful, bringing his frisbee to the door until the very end,” said Rich on Instagram.

As a final tribute to his legacy and the joyful memories, Spencer, named the official canine ambassador of the Boston Marathon, was honored with a statue in Ashland, Massachusetts.

This statue, created by local sculptor Jeff Buccacio, stands directly across from his favorite spot on the Marathon route.

Watching him be celebrated by the city filled his owners with immense pride and emotion. The unveiling of the statue was a bittersweet experience, especially seeing the community turnout.

There’s no questioning that the statue of Spencer will stand as a powerful symbol of friendship, compassion, resilience, and above all — love!

“Spencer’s statue will symbolize all the everyday heroes who triumph over their daily challenges. It also represents the countless therapy dogs, service dogs, and their handlers who volunteer to provide assistance wherever it’s needed,” Rich mentioned.

Even in his absence, Spencer will continue to cheer for the athletes from his cherished location!

“Spencer will be rooting for the runners once again on Marathon Monday,” Rich shared in his Instagram post.

You will be greatly missed, buddy!
