When we first adopt a dog, we rarely consider that they might fall ill. Yet, illness can strike, ranging from minor issues to severe conditions that require substantial intervention. Unfortunately, many owners face the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize their dogs when serious illnesses arise, especially when they cannot afford treatment. This story highlights a dog in desperate need of medical care.
A Heartbreaking Note

On a seemingly ordinary day, a staff member at Greenville Humane Society discovered a dog tied outside their shelter in South Carolina. The abandonment came with a heartbreaking note indicating that Remy, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix, had a serious and rare heart condition that was challenging to treat. Her owner, unable to afford the necessary care, made the painful decision to leave her at the shelter.
The note read: My sister could not take care of her the way she needed to be. She has illnesses I don’t believe are fixable. She needs to be put down as soon as possible.

A local news channel, WYFF, investigated the situation and discovered that Remy had been tied outside the shelter Saturday night, only to be found the following day. Rachel Dalport from the Greenville Humane Society mentioned to WYFF that it was someone who truly wanted the best for her, and just didn’t know what to do. She emphasized that Remy’s owner was not neglectful, but rather someone who deeply cared for her but could no longer provide the necessary support.
A Hopeful Look At The Future

Upon her arrival at the shelter, the staff discovered Remy had a grade-six heart murmur and suffered from skin issues due to malnourishment. The Greenville Humane Society reported that this serious condition will require an echocardiogram, and depending on the results, Remy might need surgery or a long-term medication regimen.
To assist Remy, the organization initiated a Hope Fund to treat not only her but also other abandoned dogs in need within South Carolina. In a Facebook post, they shared: We’ve had more sick and injured animals in our care recently than we have the funds for. They acknowledged that many shelters face similar challenges.
As time passed, the team gained insights into Remy’s condition, revealing that her heart issues were caused by B1 degenerative valve disease. This was somewhat comforting as it indicated she might avoid further surgeries. Nevertheless, she continues to receive regular medication for her heart condition and skin issues, with staff remaining hopeful for her long-term health.
While it remains uncertain if Remy has found a new home, she is currently in the caring hands of the Greenville Humane Society, where dedicated individuals are committed to her well-being.
