When we first adopt a dog, we don’t usually consider the possibility of them falling ill. However, illness can strike, ranging from minor ailments to serious health issues that leave owners with limited options. Unfortunately, many cannot afford treatment for severe conditions, leading to heartbreaking decisions, including euthanasia. This story focuses on a dog named Remy, who faced such a crisis and desperately needed medical attention.
A Heartbreaking Note

One typical day, a staff member at Greenville Humane Society discovered Remy, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix, abandoned and tied outside the shelter, accompanied by a sorrowful note. The message revealed that Remy had a severe and rare heart condition that was difficult to treat. Her owner, unable to afford the necessary care, felt they had no choice but to leave her behind.
The note heartbreakingly stated: My sister could not take care of her the way she needed to be. She has illnesses I don’t believe are fixable. She needs to be put down as soon as possible.

A local news channel, WYFF investigated and reported that Remy was found tied outside the shelter on Saturday night, only to be discovered the following day. Rachel Dalport, a Greenville Humane Society staff member, mentioned to WYFF: It was someone who truly wanted the best for her and just didn’t know what to do. She believed that Remy’s owner did not neglect her care but genuinely loved her and was unable to provide the necessary support.
A Hopeful Look At The Future

Upon taking Remy in, the shelter staff discovered she had a grade-six heart murmur and a skin condition resulting from malnourishment. The Greenville Humane Society noted that her serious heart condition would necessitate an echocardiogram, and depending on the findings, she might require surgery or ongoing medication. To assist Remy and other abandoned dogs in South Carolina, the organization established a Hope Fund, stating in a Facebook post: We’ve had more sick and injured animals in our care recently than we have the funds for. They acknowledged that this is a widespread issue for shelters everywhere.
As time went on, the team caring for Remy provided further updates on her condition. They identified that her heart issues were due to B1 degenerative valve disease, indicating that while she still needed management, she wouldn’t require additional surgeries. Consequently, she has been placed on a regimen of medications for her heart and skin issues, leading the staff to remain hopeful for her long-term health.
While it remains uncertain if Remy has found a new home, she is in the loving hands of the Greenville Humane Society staff, dedicated to ensuring her well-being.
