Throughout my journey writing about rescue dogs, I’ve noticed a common trend: many people tend to overlook older dogs in favor of puppies. While it’s understandable that many prefer the youthful energy of a puppy, older dogs also deserve love and a caring home.
We need to broaden our horizons at the shelter and consider adopting senior dogs. In this story, we will focus on a dog named Barney, who spent a significant amount of time in the shelter yet was never chosen for adoption.
The Sweetest Rescue Dog
Barney often hoped for someone to come and adopt him at the Darlington County Humane Society in South Carolina, but sadly, that never occurred. Throughout his time at the shelter, he remained largely overlooked by potential adopters. When others arrived to adopt different dogs, the staff would comfort him with hugs and affection to soothe his disappointment. Nevertheless, Barney’s spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to be a joyful dog during his stay.
Wendy Ransome shared with The Dodo: Barney enjoys playing with other dogs, but what he really loves is spending time with people. He is a joyful, friendly, and affectionate dog. However, she also pointed out that many potential adopters might be intimidated by his size, not realizing just how gentle and playful he really is. Wendy emphasized that Barney is the friendliest dog in the shelter and adores playing with anyone willing to engage with him.
A New Chance For Barney
In a Facebook post, the shelter staff proclaimed:
He longs for attention. When you visit his kennel, he whines begging you to take him out. He will press himself as close as he can against the gate so you can reach in and love every part of him possible. If you sit with him, he’s delighted. If you take him out to play, he’s over the moon.
Barney maintained an optimistic outlook throughout his time at the shelter, despite the struggles he faced. In February this year, when he was still waiting for his forever home, Barney’s closest friend, Lincoln, rallied support for his adoption.
To enhance Barney’s chances of finding a home, the rescue organization Paws Around The Pee Dee stepped in to care for him, offering him a new chance at adoption.
While we don’t know if Barney has finally found his forever home, it’s clear that he is a joyful creature with much love to give and absolutely deserves the best in life.
