Service Dog School Dropout Enjoys Assisting Mom with Walk Preparation

Date:

Leo has always been a creature of habit, which has led him to many entertaining adventures. However, one aspiration he never fulfilled was to serve as a service dog.

This adorable English Lab didn’t make the cut because, as his mother puts it, “the requirements were too demanding.” The training facility wasn’t too fond of Leo’s tendency to use his smarts for his own amusement!

Ultimately, Leo discovered his calling. He has become a “service” dog for his mom, applying his training in a unique way.

Here’s how…

Working On His Own Terms

After spending two years at Paws for Purple Hearts, a service dog school in California, Leo found a forever home with Samantha Welborn.

Interestingly, some of the skills he learned have stuck with him, as Leo utilizes his training to “assist” his mom on a daily basis. Though he primarily benefits himself, it’s heartwarming to watch him play the “service” role.

One of Leo’s favorite activities is helping Sam prepare for their walks. He eagerly retrieves random items like clothing, socks, and shoes to “make things quicker.”

“I adopted him after he didn’t make it through service dog school; he loves to bring me my stuff when he wants to go out,” Sam shared in the video.

On occasion, he might bring items he shouldn’t, but that’s simply part of his character. His mom recognizes Leo’s intelligence and abilities, but she also knows he occasionally leverages them for his desires.

When he’s feeling lazy, Leo likes to pretend to be asleep (though his open eyes often give him away). And when he’s eager to go outside, he knows just how to motivate his mom!

Helping Mom On A Daily Basis

Despite his quirky behaviors, Sam adores every facet of Leo. She appreciates his intelligence and emotional insight and finds his “unique methods of persuasion” endearing.

“Leo might have flunked out of service dog school, but he’s still the smartest dog I know,” Sam mentioned in a TikTok video.

Every day is a new adventure for the pair! Both Sam and Leo enjoy hiking in the mountains and going for long walks together.

“Leo is the best companion for adventures,” his mom shared on TikTok.

When they’re not exploring the great outdoors, they relish each other’s company in their cozy Colorado home.

As an emotional support dog, Leo provides immense help to his mom. Whenever she feels anxious, he goes out of his way to cheer her up. Although he may not have formally graduated from service dog training, he is always there for his mom – in spirit and action!
