Midge, a sweet dog, understands the pain of neglect and being deprived of affection and freedom. She spent her life under the control of a breeder, chained to a tree and forced to have litter after litter of puppies.
As Midge aged, her cruel breeder abandoned her. Left alone on the roadside in Alabama, she never imagined that she would soon find true happiness.
Midge’s Life Begins To Change
Rescuers from the Bigbee Humane Society rescued her and took her to their shelter. The caring staff showered her with kindness and compassion.
Believing that Midge had a better chance of finding a permanent home elsewhere, she was transferred to Albert’s Dog Lounge, a specialty rescue in Wisconsin focused on senior and special-needs dogs.
Before long, Midge settled into her foster home, where she was overwhelmed with love and cuddles that she had long yearned for.
With newfound energy, Midge was soon prepared to seek out her forever family.
She Meets Her Forever Mom

At that time, Sherry Van Elzen Hopfensperger was seeking to adopt a senior dog, having recently lost her beloved pup, Jem. When she saw Midge’s picture, she instantly fell in love.
She immediately recognized that Midge was the perfect match for her. After meeting the dog’s foster mother, who brought Midge along for a visit, Sherry was smitten.
The moment Midge exited the car, she wagged her tail joyfully and ran straight to Sherry. It was clear she was elated to meet her.
The Pup Finds The Happiness She Always Deserved
With the adoption papers signed, Midge officially became part of Sherry’s family.
Upon realizing she had finally found her forever home, she began bounding around the yard, full of energy and joy. The excitement was palpable.
With a beaming smile, Midge relished the sensation of grass beneath her paws as she dashed around, and Sherry couldn’t help but delight in watching her.
Despite suffering from arthritis due to a lack of exercise in her previous life, Midge didn’t let it hinder her enjoyment of life.
“She doesn’t walk too fast, we’ll sniff everything if we go on a walk. So we’re constantly stopping so she can explore the neighborhood. She’s an incredibly sweet dog,” Hopfensperger shared with GeoBeats Animals.
The charming pup endears herself to everyone she encounters. She adores her vet and has won over the hearts of the entire staff at the clinic.
“When she was undergoing heartworm treatment, the staff made sure she stayed behind the counter so they could care for her directly rather than being left in a cage,” she added.
Midge thrives on human interaction, and her family envisions her becoming a therapy dog to visit nursing homes and hospitals.
The affectionate canine dotes on her mom, showering her with gentle kisses.
Hopfensperger feels blessed to witness Midge’s joy and fulfillment in life.
“It warms my heart to see her so happy now. She’s a dog who views her cup as half full instead of half empty. No matter the weather, she’s always eager to go outside and enjoy her life,” her mom reflected.
