Searching for a Home: The Heartwarming Journey of a Neglected Senior Dog

Date:

The Original Good Boy, affectionately known as OGB, was a sweet eight-year-old dog who found himself at the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, DC, before being moved to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey.

During his time at the New Jersey shelter, he patiently waited for a caring human to welcome him into a warm home. Sadly, as time passed, this gentle soul remained unnoticed.

As OGB began to lose hope, his life took a beautiful turn when he crossed paths with someone special!

A Remarkable Pup

When a 70-year-old woman named Susan Wright visited the New Jersey shelter just before Christmas, she had no intention of falling for an older dog.

“We were just wandering around, taking a look at the adorable pets when I noticed one dog turning away from the door, uninterested in all attempts to engage him,” shared Wright with Newsweek.

Wright remarked that initially, she didn’t find OGB particularly attractive, as he had a rather serious demeanor with a bulldog’s squarish face and a robust, compact build resembling that of a terrier or pit bull.

However, when she learned about the number of days OGB had spent in the shelter and how he had all but given up hope, Wright found it impossible to resist her emotional reaction.

OGB’s original owner, who gifted him with this distinctive name, adored this lovely pup wholeheartedly. Sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances, he had to relinquish him to the shelter.

Upon meeting this extraordinary dog, the shelter staff instantly recognized that he would bring a lot of joy into their lives.

“He craved affection, belly rubs, and loving scratches. When he was especially happy, he would do this adorable little ‘happy dance’,” recalled Diane Ashton, a staff member at St. Hubert’s, to Newsweek.

Ashton explained that, compared to the other dogs at the shelter, OGB was much quieter and more reserved in his kennel, which likely contributed to him being overlooked by potential adopters.

However, once Wright encountered OGB, she began taking him on little excursions around the neighborhood, to the park, and for treats like puppacinos!

“We had a bit of a rough start since I was completely inexperienced with handling a strong dog. OGB initially wouldn’t look at me or respond. I noticed he paid more attention to men, especially those in larger vehicles. He didn’t react to children either,” Wright explained.

After realizing that OGB’s previous owner was likely male and possibly a runner, she decided to enlist a trainer to facilitate their understanding of each other.

This fantastic approach worked wonders, allowing them to build a solid bond.

“When my daughters found out what I was doing, they wanted to join us on walks with OGB. They instantly fell in love and thought he was quite attractive. It felt like introducing a date to them,” Wright added.

A New Chapter

One day, Wright found out that someone else was interested in adopting OGB. At that moment, she realized she couldn’t bear to part with him.

“I promised I wouldn’t leave him until he found a home. If he was with me, I could ensure he would always have a good one. If you ask me to describe my ideal dog, he probably wouldn’t resemble OGB, nor would he be as old. Yet, I realize now that I might not have recognized the qualities that make OGB such a fantastic companion, who is nearly always on his best behavior,” she shared.

OGB, now lovingly called Ogee, has finally joined a caring family.

He quickly adapted to his new surroundings and started to display his endearing and gentle character.

Wright recounted one memorable moment when her daughter took Ogee for a stroll and they encountered a little boy who fell off his bike and hurt his wrist.

As her daughter called for the boy’s mother, Ogee laid between her legs, allowing the boy to pet him as he softly licked the boy’s hurt wrist.

“I’m not sure if all dogs would do something like that, but to us, it confirms how special Ogee is,” Wright said.

It’s truly heartwarming to witness the immense difference a forever home can make in a dog’s life.

Ogee blossomed from a withdrawn, unhappy dog into a vibrant senior with a youthful spirit.

He relishes spending his days with his new family, lavishing them with love and affection at every moment!
