A discarded, flat tire found on a desolate dead-end street beneath a freeway overpass in Muscoy, California, became a unique refuge for a charming little trio.
Huddled together to escape the intense heat, three small dogs were discovered squeezed inside the tire. Given the remote setting and sweltering conditions, their odds of survival seemed bleak.
Fortunately, fortune was on their side when a kind-hearted passerby spotted them and reached out for help.
Help Is On The Way
A man who unintentionally made a wrong turn noticed a matted white Terrier lying atop a heap of refuse. Understanding the harshness of the heat, he realized the pups needed urgent help, so he contacted Faith Easdale—a local dog rescuer from Dream Fetchers: Project Rescue.
Having received numerous similar calls, Faith was not taken aback.
“We frequently deal with this. Dogs are often abandoned underpasses, in fields, canyons, or on freeways; this region is one of the worst. Very few people would go there to see these pups, and even if they did, they would likely just drive on by. It’s a regular occurrence,” Faith told The Dodo.
She promptly reached out to her friend and fellow rescuer Cassandra Aldridge to check on the pups. Upon arrival, Cassandra quickly spotted the pup, and as she approached the tire, two more faces peeked out at her.
Regrettably, the pups were far too weak and dehydrated to move from their position. Recognizing the urgency, Cassandra carefully transported the tire and its occupants to her car’s back seat.
While she wasn’t sure how long the pups had endured the heat in Muscoy, she knew they welcomed the relief of air-conditioning.
Upon Faith’s arrival, the now-freed pups scattered in the back seat, prompting her to entice them out of their hiding spots.
After some persistence, she successfully reached the frightened puppies, wrapped them in a warm blanket, and offered each some refreshing cold water, which they consumed eagerly.
“I gently stroked their heads, reassuring them they were safe and then placed them one by one into a crate. They were so lethargic that they didn’t even attempt to run. Yet, they all appeared content huddled together in the crate,” she shared.
Faith felt immense joy when she secured the pups’ safety. However, her heart melted when she observed the white dog instinctively covering the black one, who seemed recently pregnant.
At The Vet
The little pack was taken directly to a nearby veterinary clinic, where they underwent extensive medical evaluations and were administered fluids.
In need of names for their veterinary paperwork, the rescue team decided to name them after tire brands—Michelin, Pirelli, and Kumho.
Despite suffering from fleas and ticks and several sore patches from scratching, the trio was overjoyed to finally feel safe.
They likely felt even more elated after receiving spaying, neutering, dental care, and a professional grooming!
“Pirelli and Kumho were both producing milk, indicating they had puppies that were likely weaned; Michelin was cautious but is slowly opening up as days pass. The girls are affectionate and enjoying their pampering. Michelin seems to be gradually warming up, with a renewed sparkle in his eyes,” Hedy Alison, office manager at Camino Pet Hospital, noted in the report.
After receiving their vaccinations and microchips, the pups were placed in foster care where they continued to regain their health and rediscover the joy of living.
Forever Home
After a period in foster care where they fully recovered, the pups found their forever homes!
The first to be adopted was Michelin! This brought incredible joy to Faith, who was particularly worried about him during the rescue.
“I feared this little tire baby might not make it through the trip to the clinic; he looked so fragile! He refused the water offered, pushing urgency to get him the help he needed! Luckily, he bounced back and was granted a second chance! Just look at how wonderful he looks now, with a wonderful new mama showering him with love,” Faith shared in a Facebook post.
Pirelli and Kumho also secured a forever home together! The two girls are now living in a lovely home with a woman who adores them.
It’s truly inspiring to witness this little pack flourishing after their harrowing experience in a deflated tire.
