Maya is not merely an example of abuse; she embodies all the underdogs who have faced neglect, abandonment, or mistreatment throughout their lives. She stands as a symbol of resilience and a heartbreaking reminder of human irresponsibility.
Fortunately, Maya’s devastating journey didn’t conclude on that desolate street; it was only the beginning!
Maya’s Backstory
On the day Maya was left behind, a woman named April witnessed her owner tying her up to a fence on a deserted road. He abandoned her, leaving her there for good. Recognizing that he wouldn’t return, April reached out to Underdog Heroes in California.
“Sweet girl Maya was overbred, abused, neglected, and discarded like trash, chained up in extreme heat without food or water,” UH shared on Facebook.
April was baffled by the cruelty exhibited toward such an innocent being.
“She was just looking at me with these really sad eyes. I couldn’t comprehend why her owner had just left her there,” April told The Dodo.
April chose to stay with Maya until she was picked up by compassionate volunteers from the rescue organization.
Initially, Maya was terrified and insecure. Her body was laden with scabies and fleas, and she was still producing milk, amplifying the tragedy of her story. She underwent multiple surgical procedures and had a dedicated trainer who taught her essential behavioral skills.
Eventually, Maya was ready to move on to her new foster home.
“She spent some time with our trainer, and after several months, we were thrilled to find her an incredible foster family who fell in love with her and decided to make her part of their home forever,” the rescue noted.
Claire and Tom were overjoyed to welcome this lovely dog into their home.
Despite lingering shyness and insecurity from her past, Maya adapted beautifully to her new surroundings!
The Sweetest Foster Fail
Claire and Tom quickly realized that they couldn’t conceive their lives without Maya. She integrated seamlessly into their family!
As a result, this couple opted to keep their foster baby for good.
“Our original plan was just to foster her, but we fell in love and couldn’t let her go. Having Maya with us has completed our family, and we have countless adventures planned with her,” Tom and Claire shared with The Dodo.
