Moments From the Brink of Despair
Tracy Korfhage, from MisPits And Friends Rescue in Louisville, Kentucky, was alerted by a woman who discovered a frail dog curled up on her porch.
Although Tracy typically avoids rescuing street dogs due to safety concerns, she sensed an urgency in this case. The woman mentioned that the dog was on the verge of collapse, prompting Tracy to rush to the location!
Upon finding Lakita on a heap of garbage, Tracy’s heart shattered. It was heartbreaking to witness this abandoned pup fighting for survival.
Lakita was completely depleted, seeming to have surrendered to her fate. Yet Tracy refused to give up!
With her colleague, Tracy took Lakita to animal control, hoping to give her owners a chance to reclaim her. Unsurprisingly, no one came forward.
A Remarkable Transformation
Tracy committed to fostering Lakita until she was fully healed. This was where the magic began to unfold!
In just two weeks, Lakita gained a remarkable 14 pounds. The frail girl transformed into a robust, vibrant pup. She began to play around in Tracy’s yard, shedding her timid demeanor.
“She delights in the small joys of life, like basking in the sun, gnawing on a bone, or simply taking a nap,” Tracy shared.
The bond between Tracy and Lakita flourished. They dedicated months to training, transforming Lakita into a confident and well-behaved companion. She mastered basic commands and learned how to walk on a leash, although she remained choosy about her canine peers.
Lakita’s New Family
As Christmas 2019 approached, Tracy snapped pictures of Lakita adorned in her festive outfit, and the heartwarming post quickly garnered attention online!
“She truly lives for mealtime! Lakita even dances when it’s time to eat. Her big Christmas wish is to find a loving home where she can curl up and watch holiday movies. Her modeling skills are just a bonus,” her caregivers shared on Facebook.
Countless admirers fell in love with this sweet pup, but one couple, Sebastian and Ashtyn Garrison, felt an instant connection. They were convinced from the moment they encountered Lakita that she belonged with them.
They reached out to Tracy to arrange their first meeting with Lakita, and it was evident from the start that she was meant to join their family.
Lakita quickly bonded with her new family, especially the children. She radiated happiness in her new forever home, and the companionship of her new siblings made her feel elated!
Thanks to her loving new humans, Lakita has finally moved past her traumatic past and is now the happiest and most loving girl imaginable!
