When Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida, a charitable organization, learned about a puppy in dire need of assistance, they were taken aback by the situation.
The dog in question was so severely matted that her body shape was utterly unrecognizable.
Extreme Matting
The Florida rescue team wanted to uncover the circumstances surrounding this situation, but it proved to be more complicated than anticipated.
“We were simply asked to assist. When we inquired if this was a dog from a backyard breeder, we were told ‘no’; however, we were hesitant as we noticed puppies in the background of the image with this girl in an outdoor enclosure. Regardless of the past, she is now safe with us,” the rescue reported.
Once the pup, later named Loretta, was in their hands, the team got to work right away.
Due to the extreme matting, which prevented her from moving comfortably, the staff recognized that a significant haircut was the immediate priority.
Time for a Haircut
The staff promptly reached out on social media, seeking a groomer who could assist with her severe matting.
Fortunately, the response was overwhelming, and within a day, they were bringing Loretta to As The Tail Wags Grooming and Training in Oviedo, as she was unable to walk by herself.
Kristie, Shannon, and Megan came in on their day off and dedicated over three hours to carefully shave Loretta’s thick matting, which had been impeding her movement for far too long. The matting was so intense that it caused Loretta’s skin to tear in certain areas.
After a lengthy grooming session, Loretta emerged looking like a brand-new dog.
Before her transformation, Loretta was hidden under a heavy, filthy coat, and now she has the freedom to walk as a happy dog.
Loretta’s dramatic change reflects the remarkable strength of community spirit and kindness. Saying this grooming was a challenging task would be an understatement; these incredible individuals worked as if they were Loretta’s very own fairy godmothers.
Foster Home
Given her remarkable makeover, it came as no surprise that Loretta quickly found a foster home.
However, before settling into her new life, Loretta visited the veterinarian, where she was diagnosed with hookworms, arthritis, and heartworm disease. Thankfully, brighter days are ahead for this sweet girl.
Now, she enjoys her days in a loving foster home filled with humans who provide her with endless affection and support, creating the ideal setting for her recovery.
Loretta relishes her meals, which she receives 3+ times daily due to being underweight and having hookworms. She adores her XL orthopedic bed and spends time lounging on it indoors, though she prefers to be outside whenever possible. She’s ‘discovering what it means to be a dog’ now that she has shed that constraining coat of matted fur.
