A mama dog and her two pups roamed desperately along a roadside near Lake Trask in Mason County, Washington, with nobody to help them. When the rain began to pour, the worried mother and her young ones shook with cold as they searched for shelter, hoping compassionate humans would notice them and take them to safety.
The Canine Family Receives Help
When officers from Shelton Animal Control learned about the three struggling dogs, they reached out to Caryn, a dedicated volunteer at the Humane Society of Mason County in Belfair. Caryn contacted a seasoned dog trapper, D.D. Ponder, and the two went out to rescue the pups. It was already dark when they arrived, so they carefully set multiple traps filled with tasty treats. Upon seeing the distressed mama dog and her pups, the rescue team felt heartbroken, imagining the despair the family must have felt.
The rescuers began building trust with the dogs. Whereas the puppies, Parker and Petey, were curious and approached the friendly humans, Laila, the mother dog, was far more distrustful. She kept her distance, despite her anxiety to ensure her puppies were safe. Caryn and D.D. tried to use the puppies to lure Laila closer to the crate, but the plan quickly fell apart.

After hours of attempting to coax her, Laila remained on guard, refusing the chicken offered to her by the rescuers. When Caryn and D.D. had to return home to attend to their own pets, they asked a kind resident named Pete to check on the family. He offered Laila some ham, which she happily accepted, prompting him to place more pieces in the crate. Eventually, unable to resist the delicious ham, Laila stepped into the trap and was brought to safety!
Feeling Hopeful About Their Future

The Humane Society of Mason County took the family into their care. Exhausted yet ready for a new beginning, they finally found solace. After hours of ongoing efforts by dedicated volunteers, Laila and her pups were finally secured and ready to experience a brighter future. They breathed a sigh of relief when brought into foster care.
Their foster family provided them with time to decompress and showered them with love. The canine family quickly adapted, enjoying the warmth and comfort of a home. The next important step is finding their forever families.
Parker has already captured the heart of a family eager to adopt him, while Petey is actively seeking his forever home. Laila is expected to be ready for adoption soon. It is heartfelt hope that all three dogs will soon embark on the happiest chapter of their lives, as they truly deserve to be cherished and extremely loved.
