Bear, a Cane Corso dog, wandered the streets of Mobile, Alabama, for nearly a year with his head trapped in a plastic box. Initially terrified, he avoided human contact, complicating rescue efforts. His large size rendered traps ineffective. In a noteworthy collaboration, animal control officers from the City of Mobile Animal Services and the Mobile County Animal Shelter banded together to save this gentle giant.
A Mission To Rescue Bear
Over several months, Bear was repeatedly seen wandering the streets with a plastic box stuck on his head, likely the top of a trash can. This must have happened while he was searching for food, leaving him to struggle to eat and drink. Gratefully, a compassionate resident alerted authorities, leading to an organized and large-scale rescue operation, ultimately freeing Bear from the plastic box.
Despite freeing Bear from the box, he fled in fear before they could place a leash on him, but the dedicated team refused to give up. Eventually, he was caught and brought to the shelter.
“The staff absolutely LOVE him and he is being treated like a king. He is very sweet and has a long happy life ahead of him,” said Martin Miller, a rescue volunteer, on social media.
Bear Has Been Adopted
Bear’s rescue garnered significant attention, yet he remained on a stray hold for the first few days before being ready for adoption. While at the shelter, he opened up to a volunteer who decided to adopt him. “Finding a good home for a dog that’s garnered this much publicity is important. We realized one of the team members who spent considerable time rescuing him would be the perfect fit,” explained Robert Bryant, the City of Mobile Animal Services Director, to WKRG.
Now officially part of the Miller family, Bear has developed a strong bond with his new dad, Martin Miller. After enduring loneliness for so long, he will never be alone again. Notably, Bear will remain connected to the shelter and rescue community that invested so much time in his recovery.
Bear is also the new ambassador for the City of Mobile Animal Services, spending time at the shelter to promote the adoption of stray animals alongside his new dad. His touching story has captured the hearts of many, and it is hoped that he will experience only joy from now on.
