When a compassionate family discovered a tall brown pup with a black muzzle wandering the streets of Camarillo, California, they decided to extend a helping hand and took him home. They cared for the Great Dane, who expressed immense gratitude towards them, getting along famously with the family’s children and other dogs. Believing he had owners, the family searched for them but found no one. After a week together, they took him to Ventura County Animal Services, hoping they would find him the perfect forever home.
The Pup Starts His Shelter Life

Upon his arrival at the shelter, the pup captured the hearts of the staff, showing an eagerness for affection. He leaned against the caregivers and licked their hands — a friendly demeanor that made a strong impression.
“When he arrived, the staff who was the first to meet him said that he was seeking affection. He was leaning on the staff member, licking his hand — really friendly off the bat…” said Jules Hooper, marketing specialist at Ventura County Animal Services, in a conversation with The Dodo.
Weighing around 180 pounds, this Great Dane was one of the largest dogs ever brought to the Camarillo shelter. When he stood on his back legs, he towered over most caregivers, leading to his affectionate name, Scooby Doo, inspired by his resemblance to the beloved cartoon character.
Scooby Doo’s Wish Comes True
Scooby Doo hoped wholeheartedly that someone would take notice of him and provide the loving home he yearned for. As a lively two-year-old, he required an active family ready to dedicate time to his training. Although he tended to pull on the leash, often because he sought cuddles from passing people, his eagerness for love won hearts.
“He is strong and he does pull quite a bit on the leash… He loves people, so sometimes he’ll try to pull towards people because he’ll get pets and love,” Hooper explained.
When Ventura County Animal Services announced an update about Scooby Doo on social media, it brightened everyone’s day—he had finally found his forever family! Scooby Doo was overjoyed as his new mom picked him up from the shelter.

While Scooby Doo found his perfect match, more than a hundred large dogs remain at the Camarillo shelter, still hoping for someone to foster or adopt them. If you’re looking to open your home and heart to a big dog, consider visiting Ventura County Animal Services and giving their residents a chance.
