Puppy the Size of a Granola Bar Defies the Odds and Survives Against All Expectations

Date:

We stand by our dogs in both tough times and joyful moments. Abandoning them during their struggles is unthinkable, just as they would never leave our sides.

It’s disheartening to witness some dog owners who fail to uphold this commitment, abandoning their beloved pets when they face health challenges.

Take Guppy Hanson, for example, who was left by both her biological mother and her previous owners due to a leg deformity and slim chances of survival.

Join us as we trace her journey toward finding compassionate humans who embraced her as she was and provided her with a loving forever home.

Born on April 27th, 2022, in Wetumpka, Alabama, Guppy Hanson, a mix of Shih Tzu and Beagle, was one of four puppies. Unfortunately, she was rejected by her mother due to a deformity in her leg.

At merely 4 ounces and the size of a granola bar, her owners abandoned her at the Bryson Veterinary Clinic, convinced she would not survive.

Fortunately, the veterinary team saw her incredible will to live and had faith in her recovery. They set a plan into motion and took turns caring for her at home.

Becky Yourman was the first staff member to foster the puppy. Her daughter, Jess Lane, instantly fell in love with the little furball.

They affectionately named her Guppy Hanson: “Guppy” because of her petite size, reminiscent of a tiny fish, and “Hanson” in tribute to a character from Scary Movie 2.

The Yourman family provided her with vital supplements to help accelerate her recovery.

As time passed, Guppy grew stronger each day. When she reached three months, the family decided to get an X-ray, revealing that she was missing a shoulder joint and several other bones.

Despite her leg deformity, it didn’t cause her any pain, and the veterinarian confirmed it didn’t need amputation.

With an abundance of love in her forever home, the puppy continued to thrive.

Although Guppy Hanson never experienced the nurturing of her biological mother, the family’s other dog, Libby, stepped in as a surrogate.

“[Libby] became an incredible surrogate mother for Guppy, bathing and caring for her,” Lane shared.

The Yourmans observed that Guppy didn’t look at them when they called her or react to loud sounds, leading to a vet visit where they discovered that their precious puppy was deaf.

Enjoying Life

Guppy refuses to allow her leg deformity to hinder her enjoyment of life. She has discovered a passion for digging, which has quickly become one of her favorite pastimes.

While climbing stairs posed a challenge, she figured out how to jump without her arm getting caught on the steps, showcasing her incredible resilience as a fighter since birth.

Guppy delights in chewing on her favorite toys and blankets and loves family outings in her stroller.

Every day, her forever family ensures she knows the depths of their love for her.

“My son hugs her every day and tells her, ‘You’re the most beautiful girl in the world, yes, you are!’ He’s not wrong,” Lane remarked.

Those who cross paths with Guppy Hanson are captivated by her heartwarming story and her playful, endearing personality.

Guppy Hanson actively shares her adventures on her Facebook page, keeping her followers updated on her daily routines and interests. Recently, her newfound pastime has been playing with empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls.

She celebrated her first birthday in April, marked by a fundraising event in her honor. The remarkable transformation of Guppy Hanson is evident. She now radiates joy.

We are elated that she discovered happiness in her forever family. Both Guppy Hanson and her family are incredibly fortunate to have one another.
