Shugy, a pregnant homeless dog, faced hunger and harsh weather daily, dreaming of a warm and loving home to safely deliver her puppies. She came to a Dollar General parking lot in Mississippi, hoping people would help her escape her sad stray life. Despite begging for compassion for months, Shugy felt invisible until big-hearted individuals surprised her with a much-needed new beginning.
Shugy Finally Gets Help

When Mary Smith and her mother visited Dollar General, they noticed Shugy. Realizing her pregnancy, they were anxious about her well-being and her future puppies. Unable to stop thinking about her, they returned to the store the following day. After speaking with the store clerk, they learned that Shugy had been begging for help for months. Determined to help her, the mother-daughter duo decided to take the soon-to-be mother with them. Though Shugy was terrified, she accepted their kindness as they comforted her.

Mary and her mom lovingly bathed Shugy and were saddened by the oil stains in her fur, signifying she had been sleeping under cars to stay warm. After cleaning her, they created a cozy space for her to rest. Initially, Shugy was too scared to sleep, but with Mary and her mother’s gentle reassurance, she eventually felt safe and drifted off. The Smith family watched over her, falling in love with this sweet girl.
The following day, they took Shugy to Nunnery Veterinary Hospital in Summit, Mississippi. She was found to have heartworm, hookworms, and ear mites, and was estimated to be about a year old.

The sweetest dog captured the hearts of the veterinary staff, and after receiving the prescribed treatments, she returned home. Once settled, she embraced the warmth and comfort of her new surroundings, happily wagging her tail in the yard. While Mary returned to school, her family continued to care for Shugy.
Much Deserved Happiness

Just a week after her rescue, Shugy went into labor, and Mary’s mom FaceTimed her so she could witness the miracle of life as Shugy welcomed her puppies into the world. Shugy gave birth to seven adorable pups, and it was an unforgettable experience for Mary. She hurried to see the sweet mama dog and her little ones, who were thriving under her nurturing care and love. As the puppies matured, they became lively toddlers, filling the Smith household with joy and activity.

Once they reached the ideal adoption age, the puppies were ready for new homes. Fortunately, all of them found loving families. “They were incredibly wanted, and they all have great lives,” Mary shared with The Dodo.

The Smiths decided to keep Shugy and one of her pups, while Mary welcomed one of the puppies into her forever home. She believes that Shugy and her babies were truly meant to be part of their lives. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Smith family for rescuing Shugy and giving her and her puppies a chance at happiness.
