Dogs have a remarkable ability to form deep connections, especially with their favorite humans. Additionally, they can form equally strong bonds with one another, particularly if they share a family.
A heartwarming illustration of this bond is seen in two Pit Bull-mix sisters who lived together for most of their lives until circumstances forced them apart. The pregnant sister found a foster home, but even with all the affection she received, she felt heartbroken without her sibling.
Fortunately, thanks to the kindness of compassionate individuals, the sisters were reunited, bringing joy to the future mother dog as she reunited with her most significant supporter.
Couldn’t Live Without Each Other

Erica, a dog, was surrendered to a shelter in New York in September 2023 after her homeless owner could no longer care for her as she became heavily pregnant.
The shelter quickly reached out to a nearby rescue group, Twenty Paws Rescue, located in Brooklyn, to find a foster home for Erica.
“They reached out to us saying, ‘We have this incredibly friendly girl who’s very pregnant and needs to get out of the shelter urgently,’” shared Rachel, the founder of Twenty Paws Rescue, with PEOPLE.
Thanks to their extensive network, they quickly found the ideal place for Erica. Michael and Lora, from Coney Pet Grooming, also in Brooklyn, took her in as a foster until she delivered her puppies.
Although everyone thought the situation was resolved, Michael noticed something was off with Erica—she seemed anxious and downcast without understanding why.
The reason became apparent when Rachel received an email from the shelter that surrendered Erica.
“She was surrendered with her sister, who isn’t eating, drinking, or even walking. We have to carry her in and out. Would you consider bringing her in too? She’s been so miserable in the shelter,” the staff informed about Erica’s sister, Diamond.
It was evident that both Erica and Diamond were struggling without each other. Thankfully, Michael and Lora’s kind hearts led them to agree to foster Diamond as well.
Just two days after this touching reunion, on September 29, a very pregnant Erica went into labor. Her loving sister, Diamond, was right by her side, allowing her to give birth to 13 puppies. Sadly, two of them were stillborn, but the remaining puppies were healthy.
Initially, Erica was extremely protective of her puppies, not allowing Diamond to approach. However, as Erica grew weary from the demands of motherhood, Diamond stepped in to help.
“When we realized Erica was getting very tired and wanted a break while Diamond was lactating, we switched them out. Diamond became the ‘Mama Bear,’ nurturing, grooming, and feeding them with such patience. They eventually began feeding and grooming them together,” Rachel noted.
Michael added that “Diamond was incredibly gentle, truly loving that process.” Together, they provided care filled with love, ensuring the puppies grew up healthy and happy.
When the puppies were old enough for adoption, all 11 found their loving forever homes. Only Erica and Diamond remained, with special adoption conditions in place.
The deep bond shared between the two sisters influenced the adoption policies.
Never Separated Again

The sisters, who struggled to cope apart even for a few days, were not going to be separated for the rest of their lives. The caregivers decided that they would only be adopted together.
“That’s the only option,” Rachel noted. “They do everything together: attend doggy daycare, snuggle on a bed—it’s all about being side by side.”
Rachel is hopeful that soon a loving family will see the beauty these two girls possess and offer them a happy ending.
Michael echoed this sentiment, stating: “They are affectionate, loving, and playful dogs. Caring for them is effortless; all they really seek is food and love.”
Wherever they go, it’s clear that Erica and Diamond will fill their new home with joy and boundless love, ensuring they will never be apart again.
Erica and Diamond share a bond that is truly inseparable.
