Help Is On The Way

Katie from Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico was informed that six animals in Pennsylvania needed a new home because their owner could no longer care for them due to declining health.
She was contacted specifically because the animals involved were wolfdogs—a mix of domestic dogs and wolves in their lineage.

Upon learning that wolfdogs were in Pennsylvania, she knew it was crucial to move quickly.
“This situation was particularly delicate since Pennsylvania has strict laws against the private ownership of wolves and wolfdogs,” Katie explained to GeoBeats.
Due to these legal restrictions, if the owner had passed away before the wolfdogs could be relocated, they would have been put down immediately.
Determined to prevent that, the sanctuary staff set out on a 20-hour journey to Pennsylvania to rescue these distinctive animals.
New Home
Among the six wolfdogs who arrived at the sanctuary were Cassian and Nesta, a timid and anxious duo.

Cassian faced some challenges with his eyesight and was not fully sighted.
“It’s really tough for animals when they first arrive here because many, like Cassian, come from environments where they weren’t properly cared for,” she noted.
When animals come into a new place that offers improved conditions for growth, they often become very shy, taking time to adapt to a healthier environment.
Cassian fit this pattern. However, given time, he began to trust his caregivers and blossomed into the sweetest companion one could wish for.

Breaking free from his shyness also allowed Cassian to enhance his physical health.
“We aren’t fully certain about Cassian’s vision at the moment. He has been assessed and while he doesn’t see perfectly, he appears to be thriving,” Katie remarked.
A Unique Breed
After working with wolfdogs for an extended period, Katie describes them as a blend of a toddler and a shark.
“Picture spending your life with a 3-year-old for twenty years who possesses very sharp teeth and strong opinions,” she stated.
Yet, Cassian stands out.
He is exceptionally loving and enjoys giving face kisses—a behavior that’s quite rare for wolfdogs.
Cassian also shows affection for his companion, Nesta, who enjoys following him and staying by his side.
“A few months ago, we rescued several puppies and decided to give Cassian and Nesta one. They naturally stepped into nurturing roles without hesitation,” she noted.

Cassian even regurgitated his food for the puppy he adopted, a behavior observed in the wild to ensure the survival of their young.
This act was something the staff had never witnessed before, enhancing its significance.
Cassian’s vocalizations are unique, with his howls being light and delicate, and his appearance reminiscent of a lama.
“It’s nearly impossible to articulate the joy I feel knowing that Cassian has allowed me to build a trusting relationship with him,” Katie concluded.
Final Word
Witnessing an animal evolve from a troubled upbringing to a place of trust with humans is nothing short of extraordinary.
Cassian’s remarkable change wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated staff at the sanctuary, who showed him that he is deserving of love and adoration just like any other creature.
Kudos to Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and all other organizations committed to ensuring that animals worldwide experience lives filled with joy, happiness, and comfort!
