Every dog owner can attest to the fact that dogs can be incredibly unpredictable.
One moment, they might be strolling calmly down a path, and then suddenly, they’re off in pursuit of a squirrel or whatever catches their eye.
They often get easily distracted, unaware of their surroundings, which can lead them into troublesome situations.
This is precisely what transpired with a dog named Smudge, who found himself in a rather challenging predicament.
Rescue Mission

While on what they expected to be an uneventful walk at the Botanical Gardens in St. Helens, Oregon, Smudge and his owner encountered an unexpected turn of events.
Unfortunately, Smudge tumbled off the Oregon trail and found himself on a steep hill.
Unable to reach Smudge, the owner called for assistance from Columbia River Fire and Rescue.
The rescue team quickly arrived on-site, eager to help bring the dog back to safety and reunite him with his owner.

Upon evaluating the situation, the rescue team realized that reaching Smudge wouldn’t be straightforward.
To enhance their efforts, they enlisted the help of the Columbia County Technical Rescue Team (TRT).

With members from various Columbia County fire departments trained in specialized rescue operations, the TRT was well-equipped for the task.
Once on-site, they prepared their gear and devised a strategy to reach Smudge safely and efficiently.
The plan involved one team member descending to Smudge while secured with a harness that would allow them to be pulled back up together.

Fortunately, their strategy was successful, resulting in Smudge being swiftly returned to his owner’s arms.
His owner was elated to have his furry friend back and expressed immense gratitude towards everyone involved in the rescue.

Be Careful
This narrative serves as a valuable reminder for all hikers to be adequately prepared.
Canines can be unpredictable, and there are moments when they may not realize the ground they are traversing could abruptly give way.
That’s why it’s important for your dog to wear a harness or leash, ensuring that you maintain control over their actions and whereabouts.
