Dogs require love from their favorite humans throughout their lives to thrive, especially when a mother dog gives birth. It’s during this time that human support is the most crucial. Unfortunately, many treat dogs like toys, often oblivious to their needs. This was the case for a mother dog named Violet, who was heartlessly abandoned by her family after having 12 puppies—more than they anticipated. This neglect was witnessed by the staff at One of a Kind Pet Rescue in Akron, Ohio.
A Terrific Mom
Tanya Jonda, the executive director of One of a Kind Pet Rescue, was devastated upon learning about Violet and her puppies. “I was contacted by a woman in Columbus who is a friend of my daughter. She took the mama and puppies in after she saw the post on Facebook by someone who claimed they were dumped on their property,” Tanya recounted to The Dodo. Understanding the challenges ahead, Tanya took it upon herself to care for Violet and her pups, feeling she couldn’t turn her back on them. Upon their arrival in Akron, Violet was found to be severely emaciated, infested with fleas, and blind in one eye, yet her puppies were healthy—evidence of her dedication as a mother.
Tanya shared, “We named the puppies with names starting with ‘V.’ Despite being a large litter, they are very well-behaved and tend to snuggle together when they sleep, likely a result of their abandonment and need for comfort.” Thanks to those who stepped in to help, a brighter future awaited them.
Better Days Ahead
According to a Facebook post from One of a Kind Pet Rescue, the medical needs for this family included “26 DhPP vaccines, 26 de-worming treatments, one heartworm test for mom, 13 spay/neuter surgeries, 13 flea/tick preventions, 13 heartworm preventions, 13 microchips, and one rabies vaccine for mom.” Thanks to dedicated volunteers and generous donations, the recovery was extremely successful: the puppies grew into healthy, happy dogs, and Violet’s heart swelled with joy as she watched them thrive.
Soon, all the puppies were ready for adoption. According to The Dodo, six of them quickly found their forever homes, while Violet and the remaining puppies had to wait a little longer. Tanya described Violet as “a lovely girl with a wonderful disposition” who “loves all people and other dogs.” The puppies are universally recognized as bundles of joy, promising happiness to any home they join.
It’s heartening to believe that this loving canine family will soon enjoy their own happy ending, bringing joy to themselves and to those who helped them through their toughest times.
