Dogs like Mulan make us ponder: how many of these magnificent animals leave this world without ever revealing their true selves? This sweet girl, due to her difficult past, had no choice but to become overly protective, which only led to more troubles for her. Ultimately, Mulan found herself facing euthanization.
Classified as a “severely reactive” dog that no one wanted, she would bark at everyone and wouldn’t allow anyone near her kennel, prompting the shelter staff to consider putting her to sleep. But, at the very last moment, a compassionate dog lover stepped in, changing Mulan’s fate for the better!
The Unexpected Breakthrough

After being surrendered by her owners due to landlord issues, Mulan was terrified upon entering the shelter. With no experience in socialization, her instinct was to be overly protective, isolating her further and landing her on the euthanasia list.
Then, the moment of hope arrived! A volunteer at the shelter reached out to Martha Moore, vice president of Friends of Guilford County Animal Shelter in North Carolina, seeking help for Mulan. Martha, upon learning that the dog hadn’t left her kennel for 13 days, eagerly agreed to assist.
“She was emotionally shut down and wouldn’t allow anyone near her kennel. By the end of the day, she had to leave the shelter or she’d be put down,” said her foster mom to The Dodo.
After spending two hours getting acquainted with Mulan, Martha eventually managed to put a leash on her and bring her home. Initially, Mulan was nervous and destructive, as one day she wreaked havoc in the room and looked utterly frightened.

Instead of scolding her, Martha simply sat down on the floor, overlooked the mess, and offered Mulan a treat. That was the critical moment for both of them! For the first time, Mulan approached Martha and showered her with gentle kisses, as if to express her gratitude: “Thank you for not punishing me!”
Transformation Of A Lifetime

Since that pivotal day, Mulan’s behavior has transformed remarkably, as she opened her heart to her foster family in North Carolina. In just two weeks, she evolved into a brand-new dog, becoming much easier to socialize with despite still being a bit cautious around new people.
“Mulan is a sensitive girl who needs about 15 minutes to warm up to new people. Once you give her that time, you’ll have a friend for life,” shares Martha.
She even began to enjoy belly rubs and hugs from Martha, just like the other dogs. “Mulan loves playing with other dogs, shares her toys and food/water bowls gracefully, and gets along well with cats! The perfect package,” Martha expressed on her Facebook.

After two months filled with love, cuddles, training, and socialization, she became a brand-new girl, ready to embrace life!
She finally found the perfect family, prepared to offer her the understanding, love, and patience she had been yearning for all along! With all that awaiting her at her new home, I am absolutely confident she will bring immense joy to her new humans!
