One chilly afternoon in Albany, New York, a Good Samaritan noticed something unusual near a filthy garbage can: a zipped-up duffel bag with two eyes peering out from it. Curiosity piqued, they squatted down for a closer look and discovered that inside was a small brown and black tiger cat.
Unfortunate Case

Without hesitation, they contacted animal control, which promptly picked up the cat and transported it to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS), New York’s oldest and largest animal protection organization. The cat was named Newt, and as she met him, Kara Murry, the MHHS intake coordinator, was taken aback by his sweetness and ease of handling.
“I remember saying, ‘How could anyone throw you in the trash? You’re so sweet and cuddly!’ She was purring and rubbing against us for pets, almost as if to say, ‘Thank you for saving me,’” Kara shared with The Dodo.

New Chance
The first order of business for Newt was a thorough medical checkup along with food and water. This charming cat quickly stole the hearts of those around her. “She came right up to me for pets and love the first time I met her, which was two days after she arrived. [She] was very sweet and wanted cuddles and loved playing with pipe cleaners,” said Heather Ellis, a veterinary assistant from Mohawk Hudson, to The Dodo.

Thanks to her irresistible charm, Newt’s stay at the humane society was short-lived. He found a warm and loving forever home with a man looking for a sweet companion—love at first sight!

Forever Home
Thanks to her new loving dad who recognized her worth, Newt no longer had to fear abandonment. “As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. And this sweet girl is a truly wonderful treasure for her new dad,” stated Marguerite Pearson, director of marketing and communications at Mohawk Hudson.
Newt, I wish you a happy and fulfilling life filled with love, joy, and cherished moments. You truly deserve it!
