When a Long Island resident let his dogs outside to play, he could never have anticipated the surprise awaiting him. As he watched his pups joyfully running in the yard, he noticed a strange lump by the fence. Curiosity took over and he called his dogs back before approaching the oddity.
To his astonishment, the lump turned out to be a baby owl huddling in his yard, and it was evident that the little creature needed help. The homeowner reached out to the Strong Island Animal Rescue League.
The Little Baby Is Safe
Wildlife handler Frankie Floridia quickly arrived at the scene to assist in the rescue. The homeowner remained in disbelief at the beauty of this unexpected visitor. “He’d never seen an owl down like that. So he was nervous,” Floridia mentioned in an interview with The Dodo.
Floridia donned gloves and approached the fence, where he couldn’t help but admire the baby owl’s stunning feathers and its enigmatic yellow eyes.
“He’s a majestic creature. He’s beautiful. It’s such a rare creature to see,” Floridia remarked.
He gently lifted the baby owl, relieved to find it calm and unresisting. As Floridia carried the little one to safety, he reassured it that it was out of harm’s way. The owl seemed to sense the safety of its new surroundings and was transferred to Sweetbriar Nature Center for further care in Long Island.
At The Nature Center
Upon arrival at the nature center, the baby owl underwent a thorough medical checkup. Fortunately, the staff was relieved to discover that the owl had no injuries but had been separated from its family prematurely. Understanding its need for nourishment, the center’s staff fed the hungry owl, providing reassurance that it was safe now. The baby owl eagerly consumed the treats offered to him.
Thanks to the exceptional care and affection from the staff, the owl began to recover and even started flying within the nature center. Although its day did not unfold as initially planned, it received kindness and compassion from the humans around it. Following a complete recovery, the owl was released back into the wild where it belonged, happily spreading its wings and soaring away.
