Many may doubt their dogs’ long-term memory, but it’s astonishing how our furry companions hold onto what matters most to them. Even after years apart, dogs can recognize the reassuring scent of their owners!
However, this remarkable memory can sometimes have a heavy toll; while they cherish pleasant experiences, they also remember their heartbreaks—like abandonment—which can impact them for months. Take Roxy, for instance, a gentle dog who found herself in a New York shelter after being surrendered by her previous owners.
Roxy struggled to trust anyone for weeks after her heartbreaking experience…
It Took A Whole Month
Rachel Oldenburger, a volunteer and foster caregiver, met Roxy at Four Legs Good in Pomona, New York. With her experience handling dogs with trauma, Rachel knew she needed to be patient. Initially, Roxy was quite reactive, avoiding human contact and shaking when approached.
“She had many unpleasant experiences with people leading up to her surrender, and she was terrified when she was dropped off,” wrote Rachel in an Instagram post.
Rachel and Roxy’s bond developed through gradual, silent walks around the shelter, where they spent hours together until Roxy began to feel comfortable. After a few weeks, Roxy started accepting treats from Rachel—a significant milestone. The real breakthrough occurred on day 19 when Roxy, a seemingly timid Terrier mix, approached Rachel and requested attention for the first time.
By day 35, Roxy had transformed into a new dog. She welcomed Rachel’s affectionate belly rubs and enjoyed every moment of nurturing!
Slowly but surely, Roxy began to embrace her surroundings. Although still timid, her progress was remarkable from her first day in the shelter.
Still Looking For A Suitable Home
Ready to find a new forever home, Roxy finally showed her potential when Christina, a shelter volunteer, became involved.
“Shelter volunteer, Christina, began working with Roxy many days a week and their relationship FLOURISHED! Roxy completely came out of her shell with Christina, as well as with her children and resident dogs,” Rachel noted.
After weeks filled with patience and consistent effort, Roxy learned to trust again and is now revealing her genuine, affectionate self, making her an ideal family companion.
Christina is incredibly proud of Roxy’s achievements but is aware that she needs a forever home.
“Roxy was a scared, shy dog whose humans failed her. With me, she’s happy, confident, and affectionate—now she needs a permanent home to sustain that joy,” Christina expressed on Facebook.
With hope, Roxy’s ideal family will soon find her!
