Nevada Dog Overcomes Health Issues to Comfort His Brother, Touching Hearts Everywhere

Date:

Grab your tissues and ensure the rest of your day is low-key because you’re about to embark on an emotional journey. Meet Sammy, a recently adopted dog in a loving Nevada home. This Lab mix has become a hero and an inspiration to us all, motivating us to face our challenges head-on.

A few years back, Sammy’s health began to decline. However, this did not deter him; his resilient spirit led him to make headlines across the nation!

His New Family Made A Promise

Ruth Gentry and her son, Roan, faced heartbreak after losing their two senior dogs within just three weeks. In search of comfort, Ruth scrolled through animal rescue pages and her gaze fell upon a charming pup—Sammy. She and Roan drove to Churchill Animal Protection Society in Nevada, met Sammy, and instantly knew he was the right fit. Roan finally had a new best friend, and the family found joy again.

Sammy, with his gentle nature, immediately kissed Roan upon their first encounter, solidifying a bond filled with love. Ruth and Roan promised that Sammy would be loved and never abandoned.

But then heartbreak struck. During playtime, Sammy slipped and developed a limp. A visit to the vet revealed a more serious issue. Ruth shared on Facebook: “I took him to UC Davis and they found out he has congenital patella luxation (floating knee cap) in both legs. This likely predisposed him to his injury in his left hind leg.” Friends suggested that Ruth give up on Sammy due to the difficulties of his medical treatments, but she and Roan were committed to keeping their promise.

Instead, Ruth enrolled Sammy in UC Davis’ veterinary program for careful monitoring. After two unsuccessful surgeries, the vet team advised that physical therapy and a wheelchair were the best solutions for Sammy’s condition—leading to a new chapter in his life!

Sammy, The Best Doggo Brother

Over the next two years, Sammy adapted beautifully to his new lifestyle, never losing his joyful spirit. He continued to enjoy his favorite activities, was never far from Roan, and cherished their cuddle sessions. Plus, Sammy got custom prosthetic knee braces to assist him in navigating the house, giving back joy to his family in spades.

Recently, Roan was diagnosed with dyslexia and started tutoring. Sammy has been right there by his side, offering the encouragement he needs. In fact, Sammy has a unique ability to sense when Roan is struggling, quickly switching into “therapist mode” to help calm him down.
